Elura 70 problems: stuck on zoom in & won't load cassette

I've seen several reports with zoom in being stuck and cassettes cannot load. My camera worked for quite a while, at least a couple of years. First the cassette problem, so I just used it with the memory disk. Then camera automatically zooms in. It's unusable. Called canon, and they told me like everyone else to send it in.
I guess my question is: is canon responsible for replacing the camera with this obvious defect?

Any way to fix this on my own?

TIA

Get outta town!!! I've been having the same problem with my Elura 70
for over a year now, and I just tried whacking the bottom of the camera
on my hand 3 times like suggested. Worked like a charm!!! Not only
would it zoom on it's own unless I continually held the zoom button to
the left, it also zoomed painfully slow. Now it only zooms when told,
and it zooms quickly, like it did when it was new. Wish I'd read these
posts a year ago. I have no video of my little girl's first year -
    bummer! Thanks for the tip!!!!

Seriously! I dubiously tried this - and it worked! With one bang. Crazy. Wished we had looked this up earlier.

My Elura 70 now zooms in all by itself too. This is the second time in approximately 5 years of ownership. Of course I couldn't remember how I fixed it the first time. I think I pulled all the batteries, nope, didn't work this time. After 27 times through all the menus looking to turn off the option to "always zoom WAY in" here I am looking for help. You're all telling me I only have to bang it on my hand? All right... here goes........OMG! That is toooo funny! Wouldn't even call it a bang, just a gentle tap put my Elura 70 back in shape. Thanks, so much! pl

Bizarre, but this really does work! I couldn't fix our Elura 70 for over two months - the zoom was stuck on tight focus. I stumbled onto this site, figured I had nothing to lose, banged the camcorder against my palm, and the problem is GONE! It works! Thanks FixYa and all the responders.

Same here!!! been bugged by this bug fr nearly two years,,, been getting progressively more of a problem. Haven't been able to use it for last few months now (lots of missed opportunities of the kids) - the battery thing worked for a while, but then stopped.

Banged it hard today (before trying the tip f unscrewing the door) and it works!!!

I thought your suggestion to bang the bottom of the camera was pretty funny and was nervous to try it, but after a couple gentle slams on my hand, it fixed the problem! thanks so much!!! =)

For the zoom problem bang the bottom of the camera on your hand, or if that doesn't work on a desk.

Fixed mine.

Unfortunately, you will need to have your camcorder repaired. Inside of your mechanism there are several different components that can go bad and cause this problem. You might have a bad capstan motor or a bad gear. If you hear something spinning like crazy when you try and put a tape in, you have a issue with your capstan. Hope this info has helped you.

My Elura somehow is zooming in all the time. I can back it out slowly but as soon as I take my finger off - it zooms in again. Please let me know how to fix this. Thanks

the zoom in rocker is stuck, its a physical problem, you need to try cleaning it with surgical alcohol and an ear bud. or take it to a camera repair shop.

Wont take tape

Hi,
I just posted that I had the same problem with the Elura 100 not taking the cassette, although the compartment will close without a cassette. And I did have the problem with the left wheel rewinding, then the beep occurs.
I was tinkering a bit. I decided to take some video on the SD card, and I let it record for a moment. After that, I went back to trying to get the cassette compartment closed, and it worked! Almost like the camera needed reset.
We'll see if it stays corrected!
Prior to that, I have tried using a can of air, loading a new cassette, etc. And I DEFINITELY did NOT have any condensation!
Hope that works for ya!

I need help!

i had the same problem, i shut the camera off, hit the cassette door a few times (not kidding) and when i turned it on it was fixed. the zoom bar will not show on the camera screen, but it won't keep zooming in by itself!! i had gotten this advice from people who had a similiar problem with the elura 60's models, must be a problem across the board.

This is an issue Canon has recognized with some of their models. I suggest you go to the Canon website and see if you can find your their - I believe they are doing an out-of-warranty repair for the affected models.

Canona Elura 60 problem...

What a hunk of junk. Not a month after the warranty period expired, my Elura 60 would zoom out without warning and refused to stay zoomed in. I paid Canon to fix that problem.

Now, I'm on vacation (in the Carribean for more than 24 hours) and the unit wouldn't accept a tape. Every time I tried to load a tape, it would beep five times and then kick the tape out. So I tried taking all of the batteries and media out. That didn't work.

Next, I tried the drop method. I figured the unit is broken and I'm not going to pay again to get it fixed, so dropping it couldn't break it anymore than it already is. I let the unit fall onto the throw rug in the bathroom. In then tried to install a tape. Waddyaknow! It worked.

I can only reiterate again two things: dropping the camera from about 6" onto a carpeted surface over a tile floor seemed to clear up my "remove the cassette" problem, and the Elura 60 is a temperamental hunk of junk (although the recordings and playback are pretty good, when you can actually get a tape into the unit).

Problem with loading cassette

Defective mechanism, a stucked mechanism is present. camcorder are smart it can detects error and shuts down itself for safety. earlier models dominoes the defect if the user is not quick enough to react when something goes wrong with the camera. You need professional service to fix it.

Tape Ejection Problem

I have both the willful zoom and the unwilling cassette problems. In the past I have briefly fixed the zoom by opening the door and gently probing the cable to the zoom button. This only worked for a couple of weeks then reverted to same crazed performance. Then last month the "remove the cassette" madness started (bear in mind, I have only recorded perhaps 15 cassettes on this damn thing). Nothing worked. Until tonight when I simply lightly smacked the unit down flat on the manual resting on my desktop. Did this a few times and BOTH the zoom and cassette door started responding properly. I'll see how long this lasts, but it beats buying a new one or dealing with Canon. Never again.
