Louie is correct, this monitor is OLD. If you want to DIY repair, them please read an look at the pictures:
If you are going to DIY and have proper tools and know safety precaution then please read on:
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply (they should be replaced in a set), blown fuses; poor solder joints, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

Camariqqic, Your E172FP is older than dirt!!! Look at the "date of manufacture" on rear of unit. If unit is connected to a "live" 120v ac outlet, it should work. If E172 had a nice bright, clear and crisp display of text and graphics you may need to visit YOUTUBE for some video clips that will show you how to disassemble, inspect and possibly DIY repair the unit so you can get 1-3 more years service out of it. Do your research here at fixya and follow all links you find in the profiles of "budmrtn" "buddymc" "12fixlouie" If you deem unit as too old, and your really not into the soldering of parts to printed circuit boards, then just buy new 16 x 9 wide screen unit. Let us tech's here at fixya know what your intentions are??? 12fixlouie

Monitor rejects computer

I'm just guessing, but it could be that the resolution you are using on your MS-DOS monitor is not compliant with the new monitor you are trying to use. Check the supported resolutions of the monitor that you would like to use, and then make sure you set that resolution before switching monitors.

Monitor keeps saying self test everything working check plugs

The self test thinks nothing is connected to it
it might be the cable or the input circuit.
not an easy issue to verify if you only have one input.
most often its is the internal board with a failed input circuit.
you can only open the unit and test the vga cable continuity.
as most have a 1 year warranty you might want to check on yours.
