Where is the safety valve relative to the pilot on a Teledyne Laars EG-175 heater or similar?

I'd like to try to clean it as suggested.

    Thanks.

pilot on burners won't kick in. Thermo switch seems to not function all the time. Is there a way to light the burners by passing the switch?

  • scottmurphy Aug 25, 2008

have the same problem with a laars teledyne 400,000 btu. Yes it's older than dirt but the insides are pretty clean. It works great most of the time but will not kick off intermittantly. Pressure is fine etc. I can see the pilot is blue but the gut's are pretty old. It seems to help when i clean all the connections but that may just be chance. where is the valve to clean? Thanks

teledyne laars model ESC400H, hear clicking but will not ignite. Gas is on but I also never smell gas no matter how long I leave the switch to "on". Has an electric igniter for the pilot. Water pressure is normal.

The safety valve isn't opening .It's very possible that a spider is trapping the opening of the orifice.

Ok I have the schematic and manual for Teladyne lars EG 175 unit and there is no such thing as safety valve anywhere to be found. Two things to be checked- 1. swithces/sensors (pray to god it them) 2. gas valve (pray to god its not this as it will cost you $270 big ones)
place a jumper between 2 closets wires to you on the control valve (there are 4) dont have the colors of wires as I am work now. If the heater comes on then the you have isolated the problem to protective controls or thermostat. If heater does not come on then its the gas valve/wire harness grounded/pilot light.
If the heater worked fine before and now all of a sudden its not - you can eliminate the pilot light as the likelihood of it being out of position is far fetched. To test for grounded wire remove the first two wires facing you from the gas valve(same one from above) place a jumper across terminals and if the heater lights up something is grounded and you need to check all the wires. if this doesnt solve the problem the only thing left is the gas valve being struck closed and time to do some R/R. Hope this helps

My Laars 2 lite pool heater will not ignite, I have the same problem every year for the first ignition. The pilot is lit. I removed the filter to make sure it is not the pressure.

you might need to bleed the line to get fuel to the heater core. If there is a bubble in the line it will prevent the heater from working. Usually, there is a bleeder valve on the heater unit -- unscrew this and let some of the fuel drain out (into a container) and give it another shot. It should light right up after bleeding the line. If the fuel that you took out of the bleeder valve looks clean, you can then put it back in the fuel tank and it should be fine.
If this is a natural gas heater, there will be no bleeder valve -- you should have it looked at by a professional repair person. Natural gas is very dangerous and should only be repaired by a qualified professional to avoid serious injury or death.

Pilot is lit, but burner will not come on. I jumped TH/PP to TH then burner comes on. Pilot generator = 350mV.

More than likely the tempature control is defective, since you effectively bypassed that connection. I found a manual for your unit which shows different types of ignition. I'm not even sure if the millivolt system is covered in this manual. Here's the sight

Pool Heater Light main burner then goes out

take millivolt reads while main burner is on.i suspect you will see a drop in voltage until you get to point where it will no longer operate burner(around 200mv).if this is the case you probably have poor pilot characteristics due to dirty pilot, pilot out of adjustment ,obstruction or insufficient gas pressure

PILOT LIGHT WILL NOT LIGHT

the thermocouple not only keeps the pilot on but lets the gas valve know its okay to open on a call for heat, remove your thermocouple and clean it with a fine grit sandpaper and if this doesn't work replace it all together.

Make sure gas valve is turned to the "On" setting. If it is, you may have a bad thermostat or break in the wiring. Check for mouse chewings.
