Hi,
There is another control knob on there that you adjust with a screw driver...this controls how much pull the openr will take before it will reverse and go back down...you need to adjust that to make the door opener pull hard enough to get the door up...if that won't work then something is jammed or the torsion spring needs to be wound tighter to help the opener more...
But do not try to adjsut the spring if you do not know what you are doing... many have been hurt by them.

There should be two sets of adjustments and that is what I was getting at to make sure that you tried both...

However you probably have something binding up when the door is opening with the opener...this may not be noticable when you open the door by hand as the way the pressure is applied to open the door is different in each case.

Finding the source of the binding can be difficult...but being that you had to replace the gear and sprocket, it tells me that the door was pulling too hard to begin with...

Does it just need more spring help???

New , just installed ; 3 feet from closing it stops. Does not reverse. I adjusted the up and down limits to no avail

It sounds like your chain needs adjusting. Try this.

Loosen the chain enough so that you can remove it from the sprocket above the motor unit. With the door closed run the motor until the sprocket turns clockwise and stops. With everything attached replace and tighten the chain. Some adjusting of the up and down limits will probably be required.

Is the belt or part of the opener hitting on the door as it trys to go down? Since if the door is down the opener goes all the way down, it seems that it might be hitting / binding on the door somewhere and then reverses.

Liftmaster tries to close instead of open door

Remove the chain from the sprocket and then run the motor until the sprocket turns clockwise and stops. With the door in the closed position and everything attached to it, replace the chain and tighten. This will get everything back into sync. You will most likely have to tweak the up and down limits a bit. Do not over tighten the chain. It should sag just a little.

It will only travel down a short distance then reverse

With the door in the open position loosen the chain enough so that you can remove it from the sprocket above the motor. Now run the motor until the sprocket has turned counterclockwise and stopped. With the door still open and everything attached replace the chain on the sprocket and tighten. Do not overtighten. This will get everything back into sync and some adjustments of the up and down limits may be necessary. Be sure to set that down pressure control back where it was as it affects the safety of the opener.

Craftsman 1/2HP Door Opener won't stay closed

Loosen the chain and run the opener until the sprocket runs in the counter clockwise direction and stops. Now with the door in the open position replace the chain. This will get everything back into sync but I hope you remembered where all those controls were. You need to put them back in their original positions.

Loosen the chain enough that you can remove it from the sprocket. Run the opener until the sprocket turns counterclockwise and stops. With the door in the open position replace the chain. You will probably need to adjust your open and close limits per your owners manual.

Garage door opens about 2 feet and then closes in same cycle

There is an issue with the limit settings. They are the three white screws you can see with the cover off. Put the door in the down position. take the small white piece off the bottom of the gear and sprocket assembly. Turn the center screw until the silver "wing" is at the bottom position. Put the white piece back on the bottom of the gear and sprocket. Adjust the up screw until the door opens fully. Check the force settings. They both should be set on 4-5.

Sear 1/2 HP Garage door opener with replaced gears

The actual problem is after power on the opener, its initial state is uncertain. It may be in ready to close or ready to open state.

If the garage door is in closed position, likely the opener will still try to close it, because its initial state is uncertain. That's why you guys see it travels 2 seconds and reverse.

In order to fix this problem, after you power on the opener, do NOT hook up the chain, and do NOT mount the sprocket cap(so you can see the sprocket travel direction). While you watch carefully at the sprocket, press trigger button on remote control or ask someone press wall control button. Make sure the sprocket turns clockwise and stop. If the sprocket turns counterclockwise, press the control button again, so it will turn clockwise. Let it finish clockwise turn. At this moment, the opener is in ready to open state.

Cover sprocket cap and hook up chain. Mount door bracket and adjust. Your door must be in close position.

You are ready to go.
