The right wheel shaft may have slipped its pin, allowing the left wheel to provide more power. I had a similar problem with a DR Mower. Farmerbear at FixYa.com

How do I fix the speed control on an Ariens walk behind lawn mower?

do you mean the throttle cable? as its a push mower im gussing it is. If the mower is relatively new then it will be fitted with an opc (or dead mans handle) in which case there is no need for a throttle control as the engine speed is governed and should only be used at the fixed goverened speed

Self propell not working right

Leave aside all the puffery about 3-1 and such, you described a front wheel drive (pull) walk-behind (FWD), but are asking why the rear wheels won't propel. When you push down the hand grip the front wheels should spin free. Whan you lower from wheels by releasing pressure on hand grips, turning wheels lowered to ground should propel the mower along with its unpowered rear wheels now turning be ground contact. Reminder, never, ever lift rear drive wheels of any mower off the ground while walking behind with engine running:
  1. You could be struck by blade propelled object.
  2. You could pull mower and spinning blade backward onto your feet.
  3. You could lose balance and be pulled forward in a fall.
Contemporary FWD mowers are recognized by a black chain housing on deck top leading from engine to left front of deck. RWD propelling chains are situated underneath deck so cannot be seen from above.

Recoil will not pull. The walk behind MTD,Yard Machine mower, a B&S 500 Series stalled while mowing. I went to restart and pull cord will not pull more then a few inches. How do I go about the fix?

If all the safety gear is working on the mower; Possibly sounds like you let it run low on oil and the engine is locked up.
Which would mean a new mower.

Craftsman Walk behind lawnmower

usually theres just a few bolts to take off on the top, and the whole rip cord assembly will pull right out, allowing you to install the new one.
