Here's a few things to check that most people can do on their own. Keep in mind, that if you start taking the unit apart, you need to unplug the unit first. We don't want anyone getting zapped!

1) Obvious things first. If you have a propane gas dryer, make sure you are not out of gas! Go to the tank, lift the lid, look at the % gauge. If it's pointing at 5% or less, you may be empty or about to run out of gas. Order a gas delivery.

2) Another obvious tip. Check your lint filter. It may be so clogged that your dryer can't breathe. Clean it. Using a flashlight, look down into with the filter opening and see if there is a lot of lint still inside. If so, try using a small vacuum attachment and clean out lint. This applies to both gas and electric dryers.

3) Most gas dryers have either a small access panel in the front or at the very least, a peep hole. Open the panel or pop out the plastic peep hole cover so you can view the igniter. Turn on the dryer and watch for orange glow at the burner. If it does not glow, it will not light the gas burner. You may have a broken igniter and will need to replace it or have a new one installed. If you do it yourself, be sure to unplug the dryer and do not touch the very fragile ceramic piece of the igniter. You can confirm it is broken by locating the broken piece below where it is attached or noting it is missing a piece of ceramic on the igniter.

4) This tip applies to both gas and electric models. Another thing you can do is check for blockage in your vent. Unplug the dryer, and pull the unit out as far as you can to get access to the back of the unit. Be careful not to step on or kink the gasline. Pull the venting off the back of the dryer. There is usually a squeeze clamp holding it on. Clean out lint in dryer and from within the vent tube. Some cheap venting are made of expandable plastic or aluminum and can get squished to the point they restrict air flow. Make sure your vent is not collapsed and doesn't get squished when you push the unit back. Once you have cleaned and reassembled it, plug it in, turn on the dryer and watch for ignition. If it lights, go outside to the vent cap and check for lint there and make sure your vent flap opens with the hot air flowing out. Clean and adjust as necessary. If you have a long vent tube like I have on mine, then you should clean it out annually. I use a wind-up toilet snake and crank it around knocking lint loose from the walls of the vent. I can always tell when it needs to be cleaned again, when clothes no longer get dried in the first cycle. If you are unsure of, or unable to perform this task, then you'll need to hire a repairman.

Anyway, these are just the easy, quick fixes that most homeowners can perform on their own. If none of these solve the problem, you will need to troubleshoot further or hire a repairman. Hope this helps. Douglas

Whirlpool dryer heating sporadically?

Remove the lower front panel and turn dryer on. The ignitor should glow bright orange first. After Ignitor glows brightly the next thing will be the flame lighting as the gas valve opens with a click. All this should happen within about a minute or so.

If flame comes on but goes off quickly It's likely one of the Gas valve coils is opening a break in the coil as the coil heats up. This coil will shrink when cool and be able to run again. The coils are purchased as a kit.

If ignitor goes off and no flame comes on the coil kit is likely needed because one coil is fully broken inside its case. If flame goes on but shuts off shortly the problem is as described above and the kit is needed.

There is a flame safety assembly on the can above the burner. If the airflow is poor. the flame tip may activate that safety and turn the flame off. Or the flame switch may be open and not allow the flame to come on at all.

The Flame switch can be tested for continuity with an ohmeter but the valves may ONLY show bad with power applied and can not be tested with a meter as they will test good.. Good Luck

Flame shuts off after a few minutes. filter is clean and exhaust is good.

Could be a bad high limit thermostat. A bad flame sensor or bad gas valve coils.
If you let it cool down and it re-lights correctly, replace the gas valve coils.

Hello,
If what happens is the flame comes on when it first starts, after the flame goes off you see the igniter glows then goes off but no flame, the coils that open the gas valve are working while thier cool but once thedryer gets running, when warm to hot the gas valve coils wont open the gas valve so when the igniter comes on and no flame the coils have failed to open gas valve and need to be replaced, all manufactures use the same coil supplied by one parts supplier, and them not opening the valve when warm is a very common occurence regardless of what brand gas dryer it is.
The part number for the coils is 279834 they could be picked up from your local appliance parts store for under $20 or online at;

If the flame is shutting of before it reaches the operating temperatures the likely failure is a restricted venting system. There is a high limit thermostat that will cause the flame to shut off if there is a lack of airflow due to a restriction in the vent system. Remove the lint filter screen and clean in with soap and water. The filter may appear clean but it could have a clear film of fabric softener residue covering it causing a restriction in the air flow too. After cleaning the filter reinstall it before running the next test.

For testing purposes only, disconnect the dryer vent hose from the back of the dryer and put a normal load of clothes in the dryer and start the dryer. If the clothes dry in the normal amount of time that would confirm a restriction in the vent hose or the venting system. NOTE: Do not leave the vent hose disconnected after running the test. Reconnect the vent hose.

You will likely find the clothes drying in the normal amount of time indicating a restriction in the venting.

The gas flame will cycle on and off in response to the thermostat. Two minutes sounds about right for the dryer to warm up to temperature. The gas will shut off until the temperature cools down and then should cycle on again. Let the dryer run (either with or without clothes inside) and watch to see if the gas cycles on and off. If the gas does not come back on there may be a problem with the thermostat or auto sensor or the exhaust vent duct may be clogged.

Either the venting needs cleaned or the coils on the gas valve are bad. Unhook the venting from the back of the unit and run. If works ok then clean venting. If you still have the problem, replace the two coils on top of the gas valve.
