Question about Sony KP-51HW40 51" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

My Sony TV model KP51WS510 seems to have some convergence issue! I was told chip set2(STK Pack 392-560) has been gone bad. Does this sound right? And how much actual part costs? What should be the reasonable estimate to fix this problem? Thanks.

Hi
yes these ic could be defective depending on how serious de misconvergence is if it is very serious it could be the ic's or it could also be a
digital board witch control the whole convergence. On the other end if it is slighly off course it can be ajust easely

a couple of ic's average cost 40-50$ 1.5 hr with ajustment could add up to aprox 130$
digital board cost aprox 175$ but NLA
simple ajustment 30min to 60 cost depending on fee range

  • ashishmehta_ Sep 29, 2010

    Thanks again for the reply!
So, it seems part cost is if only two ics about $50. As far as timing to finish the job seems like about 1.5 hrs inlcuding adustment! Any resistors will be needed and if so, how much ususally they are? Which website I can check parts priciing incase If I asked some other parts have gone bad?
I did not get your comment for digital board cost? if you can clarify whether it is needed as part of the fix?

  • mickt66 Sep 29, 2010

yes i have gave you the infos about the digital board but ill repeat the cost is aprox 175$ but no
more available from Sony but maybe on ebay or google
to get Ic prices just type ic's # in google
other parts:: maybe it would need a 1.8 ohms 2 watt resistor price .50¢
    good luck

Model number does not sound quite correct but if a convergence problem both chips the set uses will have to be replaced and the set adjusted with the Sony remote.

Confirm actual model number and Google it with "parts" to see what it uses. Most convergence chips will have the actual STK number right on the front of them and almost all Sony sets use two chips.

Convergence does not work,why not

IT involves getting at the chips as the KP51WS510 uses two of the STK-392-560 CHIPS.

Each chip has about 18 pins that have to be unsoldered and then both chips replaced--most of the time you just need to replace both chips and adjust the set with the Sony remote--sometimes there will be another bad part around them taken out but this is not real common on these sets.

Can you solder? Are you handy if I tell you how to locate the chips and get at them?

I have repaired hundreds of sets with convergence problems.

Confirm actual model number to me and tell me if you think you can do it---if you know how to solder etc I can tell you what you will need and how to do it.

I have a sony projection tv model #KP51WS510 and I was told the convergance amplifier was going out and I was needing info about where it is located so I can change it out. Thanks

convergence output IC problem. convergence board would have to be removed - remove and replace 2 STK IC's and check the surrounding resistors. Shops usually charge between $200-$400 Be sure to vote/rate me if this helped Thanks!

Your TV most likely a convergence failure. ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses. Its a fairly easy DIY job or you can call in a pro. If you want to do the repair yourself check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, email/phone support, etc.

Sony xbr-52in projection tv show double picture's

It sounds like a convergence problem. A fairly common reason for thisproblem is the convergence chips have failed. They are usually referredto as "STK" chips since the model number of these chips start with STK.I will put a link to another part of this site where someone has postedpictures and a link where to get the parts should you decide to fix ityourself. Look at Ecullier2012's posting. Jean's posted site will notfix this problem. Hope this helps you out. Let me know.

Do not adjust any knobs as instucted in the previous thread if you TV have a convergence problem as shown below. Doing so will only make things worse. If however your TV does not have a convergence problem those tips may help.
