Question about Comfort-Aire BHD-301 Dehumidifier

We had several power outages and surges. Now our 301-C runs for a short time and shuts off. I have tried unplugging it and different outlets, but still the same. It was cleaned out not long ago and well maintained. Any ideas for a do it your selfer? Thanks

How long is a short time? 10 seconds, I know what the problem is. 2 minutes and it could be several things.

When turn off. makes a humming sound. compressor seems to be running.

Have same issue with 3 year old Frigidaire dehumidifier purchased in 2012. Must unplug to stop compressor running with power switch turned off. Unit gets hot and smells. Unplugging creates arcs at outlet since unit is pulling a lot of power. Plugging back in after some hours will make it appear to run normally and again remove moisture but it will not shut off when the fan goes off (humidistat bad?) and the set-point is reached. Cannot leave plugged in due to safetty/fire/overheating concern. Have not found answer on this forum or any other so far.

I thought the freezing up issue was resolved post cleaning of filter (didn't know there was one). Now, it will begin to run but shut off...the compressor doesn't seem to engage. How may I re

Glad to hear that cleaning the filter got us to the next step-- Congrats on the progress!
Now Tell me more about what you mean by: ..." THe compressor doesn't seem to engage."
If you can reach the compressor piping, you can tell if the compressor is 'engaging' - by noticing a drastic difference in temperature -- the outlet pipe-- usually near the top of the compressor can-- / -- and the inlet pipr -- usually further down the side or near the bottom of the compressor.
THe Discharge pipe can get VERY HOT at the top, and the Suction pipe at the lower level can get VERY COLD (likely close to freezing) at the inlet-- the lower pipe.
Be very careful!!, if the compressor has been running a few minutes-- as the outlet pipe can burn your fingers!
Anyway-- if you notice a great difference in temperature, while the compressor is running, you know that it is moving gasses thru the system-- and thus should be creating the condensing surfaces needed to cause water to be removed from the air flowing thru the coils.
Please check this, and let us know what you learn.-- then maybe we need to dig deeper--- Like where is a frost (or sweat) line appearing, -- and more about air flowing details.
Hope this was helpful- MB

Model BHD-301-D Will run from 1 min to 4min then shut off. I've tried all setting from 3 to top does same thing. I have a wet basement so it should stay on all the time. If I unplug it and then plug it...

There are 5 basic, yet solvable reasons for what you described. Please pay particular attention to numbers 1, 2. & 5.

1. The humidity extraction level is set to HIGH. Lower it to 32-35%. If you have a mechanical unit,
set the humidity extraction knob on Maximum.

2. Air intake filter is dirty or clogged. Turn unit OFF, & Unplug the
Unit, before removing to inspect & clean it, if necessary. If washed,
allow filter to completely dry before reinstalling. DO NOT operate
the unit without the filter.

3. Obstructed air flow. Maintain a minimum of 12 to 18" of clear air
space around the entire unit.

4. Cooling coils are dirty and need to be cleaned. Use warm water & dish washing liquid to
clean the coils. Rinse and wipe dry. Apply a light coating of WD40 to the coils.

5. Ambient air temperature at floor level is between 40 - 65 degrees.
dehumidifiers do not work well between those temperatures
(Unless, you have a Low Temp Unit). This applies mainly to
where the air temperature at floor level is colder than at shoulder level
in basement applications. Raising the unit up off the floor,
onto a sturdy table, counter top, etc, that can handle the weight
of the unit, plus a full tank of water, will usually resolve this
problem.

If none of the above solves the problem, it may be a case of the compressor needs to be recharged with refrigerant gas or that the humidity condenser sensor has failed. These things usually occur in units that are 5 years old or older. It's rare in a unit younger than that. But, it can happen.

I hope this helps you to trouble shoot and solve the problem. Thanks for choosing FixYa.

Demudifier worked great, all a sudden it just stopped. No power. Now it won't start up. What should I try?

First, check the outlet that it's plugged into, to make sure that there's still power to the outlet. If there isn't, then the circuit breaker for that outlet has been tripped, in your home's circuit breaker panel. Leave the dehumidifier unplugged and reset the circuit breaker. If it trips again, without the dehumidifier unplugged, then the outlet is at fault. Perhaps there's a loose wire connection or the interior of the outlet is cracked.

If it didn't trip without the dehumidifier plugged in, plug the unit it in,. But, before you do, make sure the dehumidifier's Master ON/OFF Switch is OFF. Once it's plugged in, turn the Master ON/OFF Switch to ON and set your controls. If it runs now, GREAT! If it trips the circuit breaker again, there's either a short in the power cord or an internal electrical short. Which will require extensive troubleshooting to find.

Hope this helps you solve the problem. Please let me know. Thanks.

Hi,

There are many reasons why a dehumidifier will not work or collect water.

Here is a tip that I wrote to help people to figure out what is going wrong with their dehumidifier

I have a Comfort-Aire BHD-301 dehumidifier that runs but does not collect water. What should I do?

Hi,

First, make sure the humidistat isn't set too high by adjusting it to the lowest humidity setting and running it again. Next, test the dehumidifier by placing it in a closed bathroom with a hot shower running. If you don't see water collecting in the unit after several minutes, turn the unit off and clean all dehumidifier filters and coils. If, after adjusting the settings and cleaning the unit, you still don't see water collecting, you may have a refrigeration issue. This situation will have to be addressed by a qualified technician.

Take care.

The main board in my Haier HDN455 is dead. I have power to it, then none of the power lines leaving are hot. We had a power outage and it went after that. Any luck in finding a new one?

The applaince parts companies that I work with do not provide a replacement main board. You can write or call the manufacturer to try to get a replacement main board.

These problems occur because of voltage spikes that occur during power outages and lightening storms. You should consider installing whole house surge protection.

All of your electronic equipment is subject to damage; investing a couple hundred dollars for a good surge protector may save you $1000s of dollars in the future.

I am a licensed Master Electrician, and I provide fee-based DIY assistance. The fee is based upon the scope of work. The fee for assistance in installing a house surge protector is $25. Please go to http://taeckertindustries.com/serv01.htm to obtain DIY assistance

Good morning--my Comfort Aire dehumidifier will no longer run & is still under warranty. When I turn it on the red light just comes on.

May be power supply failure, faulty control panel or other problem. It may just need to be left unplugged overnight for reset.

Comfort-aire BHD-651 Dehumidifier broken after power outage

Start with the outlet they are plugged into - any power there?
The only solution I can suggest is to take it apart and check the wiring for any burned or shorted wires.
Also check the control circuit board - most have a small glass tube fuse on them. It is possible it was blown when the house was hit.

Dehumidifier has shut down

The GFCI outlet needed to be reset. There was no problem with the dehumidifier itself.
