Question about Cameras

2 Answers

I filmed 12 hours of footage (6 tapes) over two days using two different Canon XHA1 cameras in HD mode using Sony HD tapes. 4 of the tapes are fine but two of the tapes are not showing a timecode consistently and I cannot get them to read in the camera or a Sony playback deck. I also cannot get Final Cut Pro to read any footage off the tapes. This is a desperate situation as the two tapes in question have footage from an actual wedding ceremony on them. It is strange because they were used at the same time in two different cameras but I cannot get either tape to work.

Is there a solution other than taking the tapes some where?

There is no way that the cameras to be strangely set or something like that .. specially in the same time with only 2 of the cassettes ..so the only explanation will be either that someone messed around with them like a sick joke..or the tapes that do not work were exposed to something strongly magnetic ..or those 2 were damaged from the start ..My advice is to get them to a professional recovery store and try to see if there is anything on them ...cause if they were made in the same cameras with those that work ...and in the same settings the issue can not be but one of those 2 explanations I just mentioned..
probably either human error on use..or someone erased them in purpose or mistake (strange to be mistake on 2 of them in separate cameras) or the tapes were already demagnetize from start ..and useless..

try to see if you can download them on the computer from the camera using a fire-wire ..maybe they are not seen in the camera cause you used a strange shooting mode by mistake ..and if you have something on computer there is a chance to recover whats on them ..
or try to use a player with more than one mode...maybe they were not made in HD after all ..

if you get something on the computer you can try to use a video converter to identify the format ...

Hello. Take your tapes to a camera shop rather than risk erasing them. J.

I have the Canon XHA1 and am trying to import footage into my PC. I have attempted to use Adobe Premier Pro and Pinnacle Studio Ultimate. Both programs support HD. When I plug the Fire-wire into the camera...

Sometimes you need to set the "Devices" option in Adobe Premier by identifying the model of camera you're using. Usually the problem you're describing occure if the cables aren't properly attached.

How can i edit the video if i finish filming

Assuming that you want to do your video editing in the PC rather than on the tape.

1.Your PC must have video capture device(either built-in or add-on).
2.Properly set your video editing software to able to capture video form your device.
3.Connect your camera to your PC in regular manner, like when you connect it to your TV.
4.Have your camera in PLAYBACK mode.wind the tape to the beginning of the footage you want to capture.
5.Open your editing software.turn on capture mode.
6.Start capture. At the same time, start playing back the footage on the cam.
7.When all footage were captured, click stop capture.
8.Start your editing work.
9.when complete, save it to some uncompressed video format like *.avi for later burning to DVD or converting to other format.

For beginners,I recommend Windows Movie Maker video editing software that should come bundled in almost every computer. It's fast, simple but effective enough for home-movie work.

BTW forget the old-school Linear Editing (on the tape) thing. It's slow, complicate and much less flexible than Non-Linear method.

Camera won't record/ play footage.

Video head was dirty / clogged due to old tapes usage so it did not recorded any signal on tape and now it requires cleaning with good quality head cleaning tape to record and playback properly.

I have an old Sony Hi8 Handycam model CCD-TR705E. Have not used it for about 4 years and decided to upload tapes to DVD via a DVD recorder. Worked fine for the first 5 hours of film then suddenly picture...

Try to use video head cleaning cassette one more time and check. Problem still exist then....
There is a very special cassette used to clean much dirty video heads calls Lapping Tape.
This is provided only to Sony Service Centers.
You need to contact nearest Sony Service Center.

Sony HDR-HC3 camera won't connect in HD mode in iMovie HD or FCP HD

What software are you using to capture the HD footage? Are you using the supplied software, or another package. It is likely that you have a software incompatibility. i.e. windows will recognise DV natively, but HDV requires specific codecs and software installed on your PC.
