Question about Cisco 7940 IP Phone

Why can't I connect my corporate Cisco IP Phone 7941 to a switch? I can connect a switch to Cisco phone switch and connect multiple devices. But the phone will only work when connected directly to the wall jack.

    Does it work when you plug it in to the wall? Is the switch PoE (Power over Ethernet), or are you using a powercube?

    Sure, when I connect the IP Phone to the wall jack it works just fine. However I want to connect multiple devices to the wall jack. When I connect a switch to the wall jack and the IP Phone to the switch it will not work. This leaves my only option to connect the switch to the PC connection on the IP Phone (which is a fast ethernet switch itself) but this reduces the gigabit ethernet at the jack to 100mps. I'd like to hook a gigabit switch to the wall jack and then connect the phone and PCs to it.

    If the phone is a 7941, and not a 7941G, it is only ever going to be 100Mb/s anyway.

    When you say that the phone does not work, are you getting a display at all, or are you just not able to make calls on the phone?

Connecting a hub or switch to the "PC" port on the back of the phone is not a recommended best practice by Cisco as the IP phone does not support spanning tree protocol.

I have cisco ip phones 7941 with the correct MAC and Number in the call manager , but the phone will not register


Make sure you have the phone configured as the correct device type in callmanager. Also, try and turn on auto registration in Callmanager as this will allow everything to register. Then go back and put the correct configuration the phone.

I would check your duplex settings. Often, if you hard code the duplex settings or have a mis-match; one end may not talk properly. Also, have you tested the wiring? Do you know the ethernet is okay for sure? TechRx, Inc. - techrxgb.com

Is the phone connected to a POW (Power Over Ethernet)Cisco Switch? Check the model number of the switch with the Cisco web site www.cisco.com

Have you check whether there is power available on the switch?
enter "show power inline" at the command prompt.

Does the phone work without the head set?
Does the same thing happen when you plug in the head set on another phone?

Doesn't answer calls or answers with speaker only


This is happening because your "Self-Cleaning" hookswitch is going bad. Since it's a carbon contact design, this will happen more and more frequently. I recommend sending your Cisco IP phones to IdacomUSA for repair and refurbishment. If you are the DIY type of person, we are also selling the pad and assembly for the Cisco hookswitch at $15 each (w/minimum order)

CISCO 7941 IP PHONE disconnect you out after certain time


Unfortunately this is a very common problem with Cisco's IP Phones. It can be caused by either a faulty hookswitch or a damaged jack. Both of these problems can be remedied by contacting IdacomUSA.
