Question about Maytag Refrigerators

1 Answer

I have a Maytag refrigerator that was in the home I purchased in 2009. It looks to be a relatively late model bottom freezer refrigerator and has been operating well since moving into the home in July of last year. Now the freezer is 'freezing up' in the back, requiring it to be turned off and defrosted frequently. Once this is done the freezer functions well for approximately one week before starting to freeze up again in the back. The freezer also has an icemaker that seems to work fine while the freezer is operating efficiently. Can you give me some idea as to what might be causing this problem and what might be required to repair it? The evaporator coil behind the cover on the back wall inside the freezer will ice up under normal conditions. Every 8 to 10 hours for around 20 minutes the defrost timer (or in most newer models the electronic adaptive defrost control) will turn the defrost heater on to melt the built up ice. There is a defrost thermostat which prevents the heater from overheating the freezer by breaking the heater circuit when the temp reaches close to 32 degrees F. The entire cooling system shuts off during the defrost cycle and starts back when the timer advances through the cycle.

If this ice is not melted it will continue to build up until the air can't flow over the coil to circulate the cold air through the freezer and into the fridge. The temperature change in the fridge is usually noticed first followed by the freezer.

If the defrost thermostat is bad, it can prevent the heater from coming on OR it won't turn the heater off when it gets too warm. It is clamped to the evaporator coil at the top to sense the temp. If it appears to be misshapen it is bad.
With an ohm meter it should show continuity when cold and none when warm.
You can also bypass(disconnect the two wires plugged into it and twist them together) the thermostat to see if the heater comes on then. If it does then you know the thermostat is bad and needs replaced.

The defrost heater is located on the evaporator. It is in a tube which is at the bottom and can also go up the sides of the evaporator. On some types you can see a burnt spot if it's bad. With an ohm meter it should show continuity from end to end when disconnected from the wiring in the freezer. You can also test the wiring for voltage when it's in the defrost mode.

If you have a defrost timer you can test it. It can be located under the fridge behind the kick panel on the front. Some are in the fridge with the controls at the top. You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer because that means the timer is not running. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

If you have an adaptive defrost control instead of a timer, replace it if the heater and thermostat test good. It is located in the fridge with the controls in some models and on the back in others.

We have a model MBF1956KEB the freezer works but not the fridge

sounds like you have a bad damper,if you go here and look at part number 13 you can see it
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/MAYTAG-Parts/Refrigerator-Parts/Model-MBF1956KEB/3048/0161000/M0607105/00010?blt=06&prst=&shdMod=
it's broke in the closed position so no cold air can get blown over from the freezer and into the fridge section, open the freezer door and make sure you hear the fan blowing, also check around the freezer door and ceiling of the freezer and make sure there isn't any ice, common problem with bottom mount freezers is the door can get left open, warm air gets sucked into the freezer and ice forms in the air ducts,if all looks good i would say you have a bad damper, one more thing, remove the bottom kick panel there should be a tech sheet either folded up in the panel or taped on the cabinet wall down there,it will tell you how to do a diagnostics check to check all the parts like the damper, this way you know what part is bad.hope this helps you out and good luck.

The Whirlpool Gold refrigerator is not cooling and the bottom freezer has ice formed on the back of the freezer. I purchased the refrigerator in February 2009.

If you can hear the fan running in the freezer you have a defrost issue. Depending on the Model number it can be a timer, adaptive defrost board, a bi-metal themostat, or heater.

Sounds like your icemaker is overfilling if you are finding a layer of ice in your freezer compartment. I would change your water valve located in the back of the unit. Or look at the icemaker to see if there is ice cycles hanging down from the tray. If you do not see any, you may want to look at your freezer drain to see if it is clogged causing water to be drained in your home. Coulc be several different things honestly. Hope this helps!

Ice and water on bottom of freezer

sjlobo, sounds like your defrost drain pan is frozen over or has some gunk in it. When the unit goes into defrost the water is running onto the freezer floor and out the front. Remove the lower bin and check the drain hole. You may have to remove the freezer back panel. If you can, just use some very hot water and some sort of baster to unfreeze the drain. Check this first, Catriver..post back.
