Tapes bias for Teac X-1000R

Which is the best R2R tape to use with my deck?

If you can get a hold of EE tape, that stuff provides the best frequency response on a X-1000R. EE is pretty hard to find at a good price, so my second choice is Maxell UD.

How can I be sure I am getting a 16.8 belt for my TEAC x10r R2R? I don't want a 17. Thanks!

You can order them from Marrs Communication. That is where I get mine and I am a past Teac Lead Technician. The 16.8" X .330" ones are the best ones. Don't buy a 17" belt from Teac as this is the wrong size. Many of my clients find this out as I have to change them inside of 6 months.

How do I set up my jvc_td309 double cassette deck for recording on cassette tapes? Also what settings?

Adjust recording bias, if one, for the kind of tape you are using and you are good to go. For best performance use the brand of tape that was used to set up the machine when made.

If you have a fine tuning control for the bias, use it per instructions for best frequency response and s/n ratio.

AKAI X-1810D LOW HUM WHEN RECORDING REELS

I am not an expert in the repair of Akai units- most of the time I refuse them, however just to put you on the right path, the hum is coming from a power supply issue in the record audio section or may be in the bias section. You may need to put new Electrolytic caps in the power supply to resolve this. You can also scope the supplies on this deck to find the cause. I commonly work on Teac, Pioneer, Otari, Studer, Sony and better made decks. Some brands are real trouble and are more costly to repair due to poor construction.
I have been doing repairs for 40 years so far.

What is the bias control's function?

The Bias control is used during recording. If you turn down the bias, you will get more highs, but the distortion will increase, and then start to increase dramatically if you back off the bias more.

As far as playing tapes from different decks goes.......

1..Does the tape that you recorded on your deck sound OK on your deck ?
2..Does the tape that you recorded on your deck sound OK on other decks ?

If 1 and 2 are true, then your deck is OK.

If the tapes recorded on a specific deck sound bar on yours, but 1 and 2 are true, then the other deck is faulty.

When a deck leaves the factory, the head is aligned to a " standard " tape. By standard tape I mean a very special tape recorded in such a way, that a tech can tell if the head is out of align and "tweek " the physical alignment of the tape head..

All decks are aligned just a little differently, but fairly close to each other.

first do the mechanicals....is the head of your deck spotlessly clean ?. Use 99% pure isopropanol alcohol and a cotton swab. Never use anything metal to clean the tape head. If you scratch the head, its toast.

If your deck is clean, plays its own recordings well, and those recordings play well on other decks, then your deck is not the problem.

Hope this helps,
Rob

I have a teac 3340 reel to reel recorder and believe it can only function in 2 speeds 7 1/2 ips and 15 ips. I have many reel to reel recordings that are 3 3/4 ips. Is there an adapter or gadget I can use...

In short, no. if you look closely you will see the Teac 3340 has a much larger/thicker capstan shaft than other Teac reel decks. This feature allows the faster tape speeds...7 1/2 and 15 ips. In order to slow down the Teac 3340 you would have to change the flywheel to one from another deck that was made to run at 3 3/4 and 7 1/2. Which is possible but some work..plus you would have to find a slower speed flywheel from another Teac deck. Also to maintain performance, the bias and Eq positions for the slower speeds would have to be readjusted from 7 1/2 and 15.

Correct Tape Selection button configuration on TEAC V377 Model

Ferric tapes use standard bias and playback. FeCr (ferric-chrome) use standard bias and chrome pb. Chrome tapes use high bias and high playback.

Teac X-1000r broken drive belt

Gidday Chino

You can get a FRESH belt kit from here. Cost you $10 plus some post. There is a new pinch roller listed against this old girl also could be worth replacing at the same time when you service the deck.

My Teac R-H500 tape deck will not play tapes

The belts will have failed. You will need to replace them for the deck to be reliable. If you are mechanically minded I can talk you through it... You giving me a FixYa rating will help my profile and loosen my lips on how to overhaul your deck. :)

Teac A-21 Stereo Cassette Tape Deck turns un, but won't play cassette tapes...

very likely that the drive belt has broken. I have fixed a TEAC myself using a large O-Ring from a hardware store (I know I was lucky to find a very close match). Open the unit and find the broken belt and take it to a hardware store to "size up" a replacement. Use the opportunity to oil the gear shafts and clean the rubber pinch roller.
