Question about Craftsman 42 in. Deck 19.5hp Lawn Tractor

1 Answer

I have replaced the mower drive belt..the belt from the tractor to the mower deck 4 times...usually after only 2 or 3 uses and at about 50 bucks a pop each time. After the 2nd time I replaced a pully that was separating but that didn't end it. Every pully looks good and spins freely. The belts don't shred they snap in two but do show some wear spots here and there with maybe more wear on the thin side of the v belt. Thoughts Deck looks like new on the pully side reply at cnt21@frontier.com

Considering what you are paying for belts, I would very much suggest you schedule a repair at the shop. Less cost. Also, if it still snaps a belt right after they have had it in, they will replace it. Very odd, the clean snapping. Makes me wonder if there is a malformed surface contacting the belt intermittently. Changing Blades

With most small lawn tractors I've dealt with, you want to unhook the deck-blade drive belt, some have one large belt that turns the blades as well as the rear wheels, others have more than one belt.. usually you will find four brackets that suspend the entire mower deck below the lawn tractor. To locate these brackets raise the mower deck so that its not resting on the ground, then push the mower deck side to side and notice where the attaching arms are moving under mower but above the deck, once you find the four brackets, lower the deck 2 its lowest point. remove the connecting pins noting the exact hole each pin came out of, if you have not removed the belt bye now do so at this time. you may find a stubborn piece of metal preventing the belt from coming off near the larger pulley Don't bend it out of the way just remove or loosen its nut,its there 4 a reason. so now, 1 the belts off the pulley. 2. the pins or bolts have been removed from the suspending arms and the hole positions have been noted. remove any other actuating rods or levers remaining so that the mower deck can slide out from under the mower. you may have to put the front wheels on a 4x4 blocks or similar to accomplish this. once you've got the deck out carefully turn it upside down, use blocks to keep from mashing pulleys, etc. you will probably see two or three blades, remove hex head bolt w/ washer holding blade to spindle, be sure to note cutting side of blade and direction of travel. If you don't see bolts in the center of blade look for my other solution for changing blades and blade bearings.

The belt on the cutting deck on my NZT, 52 inch mower deck keeps breaking.

The belt may not be that good of quality. Or you have it to tight. Next time it break I would recommend spending a couple extra buck on an industrial grade belt.

My lt1000 craftsman riding mower belt broke. I bought a new one and can not seem to find the manual to see how to replace it. Can you show me a diagram please?

On your mower, lift up the seat and you will find a silver sticker with numbers on it. There is a 9 or 10 digit model number. It will look like 123.456789 Go to www.searspartsdirect.com and input your model number and perform a "model" search. I am assuming that the belt you are referring to is the deck belt. Go to the deck section and you will see a basic pattern of what shape the belt will have when installed. There are 2 kinds of pulleys on your deck...V-groove & flat side. The v-groove pulleys go on the inside of the belt, the flat side will go on the outside of the belt.

If the mower is more than 3 or 4 years, it is probably a good idea to replace the drive belt(s) also.

Good luck.

What is the easiest way to remove the deck to change mower belt.

Your listing doesn't specify the model number of your tractor. But I found a users manual for a 24HP model 917.28936 here and perhaps this is yours, or similar.
This model uses a single mower drive belt (some tractors use two separate ones) and you do have to remove the mower deck to replace the belt. The procedure is in the manual. Hope that helps.
