From your description sounds like the spring is broke. It is secured at both end may have slipped past retainer on one end or the other. If this is the case may be able to fix without buying new spring.

I replaced a broken starter cord and when I reassemble the starter won't turn. Any ideas?

Remove for the n-th time the pull start assembly. Confirm the engine will in fact rotate by hand. Turn the flywheel a full turn or more ensuring that the engine is free. You should expect to feel some resistance from the compression cycle.

Holding the hand crank assembly attempt to pull the pull-cord and observe that the hub rotates. When released the spring returns the cord and handle into the wound position.

If the cord will not pull or operate as expected then remove and reassemble the cord into the pulley making sure that the knot retaining the cord is small enough and does not interfere with the operation. U-tube has several videos showing how to assemble the cord to the hub.

Toro Recycler GTS2 that tries to turn over on reverse when I pull the starter cord. WHat is the problem?

Possible sheared flywheel key or

Valves badly out adjustment causing the decompression system not to work or the decompressor itself has failed.

I cant pull the cord in my pressure washer it feels like it stuck thiere is no pressure in it it wont pull

Take the sparkplug out and see if you can pull the cord then. If fuel comes out of the sparkplug hole the carburetor is leaking gasoline in to the engine filling up the cylinder causing the lockup. The carb has to be rebuilt. Another problem mice like to build nests around the flywheel which will prevent the engine from turning over. You have to remove the recoil housing and if there is a nest clean it out using a screwdriver or use a compressor to blow the mess out.

The pull cord is stuck?

take the flywheel cover off and see what has it stuck.if it is the square nut that the rope pulley goes on the it needs some oil put in the hole on the end of it.it should turn to the left and not turn without turning the flywheel to the right.once you have it where it will turn easily to the left it should pull the pull rope back in after the engine cranks.if the flywheel won't turn to the right then you have a locked up motor.

Can't start Chipper

Unplug the spark plug wire FIRST.  DO NOT SKIP THAT.  Then, WITH THE SPARK PLUG WIRE UNPLUGGED AND DISCONNECTED AND NOWHERE NEAR THE PLUG TIP, get a good sized stick, and try to turn the cutter wheel assembly in reverse.  I suspect you have a piece of wood stuck in there, and it won't come loose unless you turn the thing backwards.  You have to disconnect the spark plug because the engine could fire when you turn it.  Even if it doesn't start, one good kick could hurt you pretty seriously.  So, go unplug the spark plug and do your thing.

How do I get the pully off my 1987 Dodge Colt

OK, the Crankshaft, Camshaft, and the Power Steering pulleys are all secured with bolts and once the bolts are removed, the pulleys can be pulled off by either using a puller, or by gently tapping on each side to loosen them & they should slide straight off. They can't be pulled by prying on one side or the other you could bend & damage them, straight forward is the key. Spraying a little penetrating oil into the space between the crank or cam after the bolt is removed should help to remove some of the varnish that has built up & that will make them stick. The most difficult part is to prevent the engine from turning while removing those bolts. Generally you can put a breaker bar on the crank to stabilize it & successfully remove the other bolts, but removing the crank bolt itself wll require that you either get the tool designed for keeping the engine from turning ( a dealer item), or maybe with the help of an assistant, remove the starter & use a pry bar to prevent the flywheel from turning, or, if you have an inspection plate on the bellhousing that is easy to remove you can use a pry bar or block of wood against the flexplate or flywheel there. A block of hardwood (you have to fabricate this) that can be wedged against the flywheel/flexplate will prevent damage to the teeth and provide you with a means of stopping engine movement. You don't want to turn the engine backwards. good luck.
