A "load balancer" is one computer that has 2 or more computers 'behind" it. It decides which of the "back-end" computers are "least-busy", and transparently submits your transaction to one of those "back-end" computers.
Obviously, large companies like eBay and Google _greatly_ rely on such "clusters" of computers to serve hundreds of transactions per second.
