COMPRESSORS HAVE AN INTERNAL T-STAT TO PROTECT THE WINDINGS ... SOME THING IS CAUSING YOUR COMPRESSOR TO RUN "HOT" THIS WILL KICK "IN & OUT" THE COMPRESSOR DURING COLLING OPERATION AND HEAT MODE (IF IT IS A HEAT-PUMP). 1ST THING TO EASILY CHECK IS THE CONDENSOR "OUT-SIDE" COIL. (CLEN BOTH WHILE YOU ARE AT IT). THESE FANS PULL THE AIR IN AND A BLOW OUT THE COIL .... ALL THE DIRT WILL BE ON THE INSIDE. 2ND THING IS THE FAN ITSEL OVER HEATING AN TURNING "OFF" ON ITS OWN "BUILT-IN POTECTION T-STAT". THIS WILL GIVE YOU THE IRRATIC OPERATION YOU ARE DESCRIBEING. I TEND TO THINK IT IS YOUR FAN MOTOR ... EASY TEST. TURN "OFF" EVERYTHING BUT THE FAN. SET IT FOR MANUAL "RUN ALL THE TIME" POSITION. THE FAN SHOULD NOT KICK OFF !!! IF IT DOES YOU FOUND THE PROBLEM. IF IT DOES TURN OFF IT CAN BE A WEAK CAPACITOR. UNITS VARY ON WETHER THE CAPACITOR IS FOR COMPRESSOR/FAN OR HAS A SEPERATE CAPACITOR FOR EACH. CAPACITORS ARE NOT EXPENSIVE. HOPE THAT CAN NARROW YOUR PROBLEM DOWN

Hello Tom ,   I'm sure i can help you with this.... I work on these units everyday. unfortuneately im not there to put my hands on it but i will explain as clearly as possible.    The most common problem I tend to find with these units is that the control board  and indoor fan motor tends to go bad in these quite often.  If you put the unit in A/C MODE  and/or Fan mode and set it to high if it will not speed up from low , then your problem could be in a couple different places.   1st.  The bearings in the fan motor could be wearing down ,  2nd  The Control board could be bad  in that its not telling the fan motor to speed up.

And when you tell me that the compressor doesnt run in that mode at any given time..... which the electric heat and heat pump itself works together so that when the load is really tough  that the heat pump doesnt over work and in general saves life on your compressor.

Solution is this.

Take your indoor fan motor off and and drill out the rivits  and it pulls apart easy, and replace the bearings and grease them.

ALIGNMENT OF THE FAN IS A MUST.   doesnt cost much at all the fix this. Just a little time and bearings

Replace the Board in the control box

This my friend will definetly solve your problem.    These problems i see everyday with these same units.

SOURCE: Problem with GE Zoneline 5200 model

Heat pumps have saftey circuits that prevent liquid flooding of the compressor. Inadequate airflow across the evaporator in cooling can trip this circuit. Have your package unit serviced with particular attention to cleaning the evaporator coil and be sure your filters are clean and changed frequently in the summer months. Hope this helps GL!

AZ28E15DABM1 trips at the plug when on heater mode

Hi, this will happen because you have a problem with the heat side over amping for what ever reason. If it kills power to the plug and you have to go to the breaker to reset it, first take a look at the breaker.Remove the panel cover, look it over for signs of over heating, cracking and so on. Shut it off and take a screw driver to tighten wiring. You will not get shocked as long as the breaker is off. Wiring tends to loosen up and over heat over time and will cause a breaker to trip. They get weak. This may be you're only problem. After doing this, try it out and see. If it looked good, and the heater works fine, you should be good. The heater more then likely, draws more amps. You may have a dead short if it trips as soon as it is turned on, or does it run for awhile before it goes down? Let me know the outcome so we can go from there. Sincerely,
Shastalaker7

Knocking Noise?

Might be the compressor. It would be a good idea to shoot it with some compressor oil.
