Question about Poulan Garden

2 Answers

My neighbor gave me a Poulan mower that doesn't work. I am trying to trace the problem but don't really know what I am doing. It doesn't start. It has a new spark plug that I can only assume is gapped right. I have emptied the gas tank and put in new gas. I have pumped the primer 3 times, as stated near the primer, and the primer works as far as I can tell. But It won't start... not even for 1 second. I don't know if the spark plug is sparking or whether or not any power is getting to the spark plug to create a spark. How do I check to see if the spark plug is sparking? If it isn't producing a spark..then what?

Sounds like you grounded it ok. Don't assume the new spark plug is gapped correctly, check the manual or call the parts store and ask what the gap should be. Keep in mind that it's possible that a new plug is bad, maybe try another? Definitely make sure the safety switch / handle / whatever is engaged. If still no spark you may have a bad coil / module.

Remove plug, with plug wire connected to plug ground plug to the head and pull you should see a spark. If not if your mower has safety swithes you may have to jump around them.Or relace ignition unit. If you got a spark, try putting a little gas in the spark plug hole before putting plug in. If it pops then you probably have a fuel problem.

Thank you very much for your reply. I know very little about small machines or anything mechanical...but I don't think I am beyond learning. I did my best to 'ground plug to the head' but not sure if I did it correctly. I have posted a picture of what I have done to a personal web site of mine if anyone wants to take a look to see if I grounded the spark plug or not After grounding the spark plug I turned off the lights in my garage and pulled on the starting chord but was unable to see a spark. If I didn't ground the spark plug correctly (wrapped one end of a wire around the threaded end of the spark plug and the other end of the wire I wrapped around a bolt I had loosened, and then tightened the bolt back up), what do I need to do to ground it.

If I did ground it correctly and saw no spark...what's my next task?

Again, thanks for the first response and thanks to anyone that helps.

Why do my poulan riding mower cut off when releasing brake or clutch pedal and even when engaging mower blades

You have a fault in the safety circuit that prevents certain actions. A good DIY person with circuit tracing knowledge should be able to check each switch in turn, if not its a dealer/ garden machinery shop job. Are you heavy enough to close the seat switch? Its just a thought ?

We bought this mower about a month ago. My husband is getting ready to deploy for a year, so I thought I would mow make sure I don't have any issues before he leaves. Of course, I...

The most simple solution is try using fresh gas (dump the old, put in new), if that doesn't work it is probably a carb issue that needs to fixed.
If for some reason you can't get it to work, one of the awesome non-profits available to military families is Project Evergreen, they'll mow your lawn for free while your husband is deployed.

I have a new poulan mower. I used it only once. Had trouble starting it. Primed it 6 times before it would start. Tried to use it again to day primed it 10 times no start!

If you used old fuel that could be the problem. Today's fuel with ethanol goes bad in about a month, the volitiles have evaporated away and what is left does not combust so easily. If you used old fuel you will need to empty the old fuel out into a container and you will need to get new fuel for it. If it has a float carburetor then you will need to drain it also before you put new fuel in tank.

If you do not know what I mean or how to do it, reply with the make and model number of the engine and I will look it up to see what you have and give you the right directions from there.

I hope this really helps you.

Bad battery, I know that you said that you have a new battery, try to borrow one from a neighbor and test it. Yours could be insufficient in cranking amps or your battery is bad. I have had a battery that would show the proper voltage, but as it had aged the cranking amps had fallen off and it could not do it anymore. This condition is not so common as a bad cell, but it does happen, it did to me.

I hope this helps.

Hi, Received a used poulan we940rc with broken cable (start, turtle, rabbit). Cannot start engine. Check no sparks on spark plug? Magneto dead? Any manual so I can try to repair if not will scrap. Cao...

You can check for spark by removing the spark plug, reattaching the plug wire and grounding the plug to the head and having someone pull the starter while watching the plug. The start position on the throttle cable actuates the choke on the carb, which is pretty important for a mower with a throttle cable in order to get it to start. Get the model number off the back of the mower and take it to a small engine repair parts shop.

If really helpful, please rate.

Craftsmanship in the USA? Ah, that is a good one for this day and age. Besides the fact that most ALL of the large American corporations have outsourced the manufacturing of their goods abroad, I guess craftsmanship is still alive and well in a few places here. Anyway, Poulan is mostly Chinese or Mexican, Briggs is an American made product and you may notice that a Poulan product will say "Assembled in USA" which is NOT the same as Made in The USA....but, I digress....we have mechanical dragons to slay right now!
I suspect a fuel flow problem. I usually instuct people to pull of the brass bolt that holds the float bowl onto the carburetor body and check it for debris, gum, varnish or the like. I would be a little surprised if THAT is the problem with this new mower...but if it has been used without a fuel filter, that COULD be the case. Drain the fuel, remove and clean the bowl and inspect the bolt that holds it on,,,or....if still under warrranty...(most likely it is)...see if the brainiacs at the Poulan factory authorized shop can find the problem (not trying to be smart, just saying). Post back, because I love a challenge and MOST PEOPLE on here don't post back which is really starting to bug me!

I just purchased a poulan lawn mower at Kents. Have not used yet. Can you add unleaded gas to the poulan lawn mower/do you have to mix the gas?

You do not mix gas in a 4 cycle engine. You have to mix gas and oil for a 2 cycle engine, such as in a weed whacker, chainsaw, or leaf blower. I do not know of any 2 cycle Poulan mowers (or any other brands for that matter). Unleaded gas is all you can buy in the United States and all current mowers will run on it, although they really don't like that new ethanol additive. If your mower is new then it should have come with an owner's manual which will explain what to do, as well. Hope this answers your question.

Trying to fix the pull cord on my Poulan push mower... Removed the top cover and don't know what tool to use to remove the cover for the cord - any ideas?

Many mowers use large bolts, which you can remove with the right-sized nut driver. Do you see any bolts sticking out of the cover? If you don't have a nut driver, a socket wrench or even adjustable pliers will work.
