All contact information has dissapeared

All my contact information has suddenly disappeared both from the phone and the sim card and I cannot get the phone to accept any contact information to save it. If I transfer the simm card to another phone it seems that the contact info on the card is still there. Yet the phone will not read it.
I have a phone holder with two small magnets to close it. Will this have an effect on the phone?
