Only seen 2 bad fans on these. Most likely the color wheel (bearings going out). It will get worse to the point the set will no longer turn on. You could replace it yourself but you couldn't align it. Best to call a local shop that you can trust and have them do it. Make sure they're an authorized Samsung repair shop because they'll get better price on the part.

When turned off the tv makes a whining sound (not the expected whining noise) and then sounds like a wheel (like on Wheel of Fortune) slowly winding down. Yesterday it didn't come on (sound, no picture) so...

The whining if it sounds like a mosquito type whine! it can be a capacitor, i have same issue, you can usually hear when u are on standby but if your hearing like a "wheel of fortune"! and slowing down would likely indicate it's a fan which is possibly covered in dust and the whining is the fan stopped trying to power forward or it slowly moving and slowing down. If you think it's the fan you should unplug your TV to avoid the fan burning out then have someone who knows what their doing take a look at than fan for you and clean the dust away from it, you may be able to get some access through vents in the side and can try your vacuum cleaner in those vents while TV is unplugged but i'd not go messing inside a TV without wearing some rubber gloves!
Looks like the engineer would need to remove TV casing, check fan to see if it is blocked with dust or not, or if just failing for other reason then either clean or replace. If you don't get it done and the fan fails to cool the TV your risking other vital components overheating and breaking for good so best get it looked at, sounds like the fan to me...

I have a Samsung hlp5063w dlp tv. 1- loud buzzing noise coming from the left side of the set (looking from the front). When I tap it the noise tends to go away and come back. So I'm thinking it's...

It is much more likely considering all these the wheel fails to be your issue.

The problem is often described as a fan like or high pitched sound which since the motor on the wheel turns at over 12,000 rpm is likely to be the cause.

Hint: most color wheels if you listen from the rear when the set is shut down the whine/fan noise instantly slows down until the wheel stops.

Eventually wheel will seize up and shatter and set will not come on.

Samsung model HLP4663WX/XAA with loud buzzing noise, need to know which part to replace.

See attached photo: you have a bad color wheel----it turns at about 12,000 rpm and bearings in the tiny motor go bad.

High pitched or fan like sound is classic symptom.

The wheel is available on the internet and You Tube has video instructions by model number for replacing it---Google the model number for the part number for your set to locate the part and instructions.

This for most people is a do it yourself job---takes like 45 minutes start to finish.

If color wheel slows too much set will shut down as its speed is monitored and the wheel can even shatter causing shutdown of the set.

I'm experiencing a loud buzzing (fan?) sound that just started recently while watching my HLP5674W. The picture is fine, but the sound of what may be a fan or something like that is very loud and will...

Loud sound would be coming from defective color wheel that is mounted i light engine, next to lamp housing. Replacement of color wheel is required expertise/ experience and professional will do that for you in correct and in safe manner.
Contact local tv repair shop to get color wheel replaced in tv.
Thanks.

PICTURE STOPS & DETERIORATES THEN GOES BLACK. WHEN I TURN SET OFF I GET A WHINING SOUND (FAN?) FOR 20 SEC. & THEN SET TURNS OFF

The sound comes from the color wheel and not a fan, common to samsung dlp tv's which can be the cause of the shut down.

Projection tv has really loud buzz or hum

You may not see any deterioration in the picture when the color wheel begins to go bad. The noise will get louder and eventually, it will shut down or the wheel will shatter while the motor continues to spin. If that happens, you'll have a black and white picture.

If its a Samsung DLP that is mercury vapor lamp driven, its a safe bet the color wheel is going bad.

your keeping a part that is warming up and shuts down your shutdown that protects the tv from burning up... cooler... to find this you might need a hair dryer or a can of freeze mist.
I believe the left side is your high-voltage section.
you can also let it warm-up without the fan .. let it shut down and feel parts with set unplugged to see what is running hot.
