Hello

Is your laptop asking for a Hard drive password when turned on? If it is, then you can get rid of it by replacing the hard drive for example.

The password can be removed from the drive with special tools. But if you are unable to get past this screen, then you must remove the hard drive and perform the unlocking for example in a desktop computer, it is not a simple process.

Easiest solution for you is to simply replace the drive with another one and the password will not be asked again.

How do i get past the screen with a little padlock on my ibm laptop after forgetting my password

This is a bios password and very difficult to crack, removing the power supply, main battery, and the cmos battery on the motherboard will not reset it. Go to www.ebay.com type bios password and select IBM from the list of sellers.

How to get past screen with padlock on it after forgetting password for my ibm laptop

The quickest and cheapest way to get past this is to download a password recovery program from the web. These are essentially hacker tools but work great. Just search to find one and follow the instructions it gives to reset/get past the password screen. Please proceed at your own risk obviously.

I have a ibm thinkpad t20 and when the internal battery died the computer started asking for a password when booting up. I know how to reset the password on a desktop but this thinkpad has me stumped. Can...

Hi,

the default BIOS password for this model is merlin but if that doesn't work you have a hard drive password set and may for lack of a better term be screwed. You can try zero wiping the harddrive from another system assuming you have the right cabling/adapters.

If the Hardrive is locked but the BIOS password works you can also acquire a new hard drive cheaper than a password cracker in most cases.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

Just bought IBM thinkpad 380z laptop for $30 they said that they lost the password for it. When I turn the computer on the screen goes black and then you have a lock symbol that appears. Anyway of...

Battery fully charged, battery installed in the IBM Thinkpad 380Z.
Laptop off.

Turn the laptop over on it's top cover. Remove the Memory Compartment Cover. (Front of laptop facing you. Cover to the front right. Remove one screw)

On the laptop body, you will see the hole, for where the Memory Compartment Cover screw came out of.

Right below the hole you will see two metal pads. Copper or Brass. These two little pads are pretty close to each other.

Take a flat tip screwdriver, and touch the tip to both of them at the Same Time. The tip of the flat tip screwdriver, must be wide enough to touch both of those pads. Hold it there for Two seconds.

You are shorting the Power-On Password jumper pads.

Put the Memory Compartment Cover back on. Turn the laptop over. Press the Power On button, and hold it down until the laptop powers up.

If a Supervisor Password has bent set, as well as a Power-On password has been set, this will not work.

If so, past this point I suggest it will have to be taken to a tech, who will contact Lenova, (IBM now), and verify that you have purchased this laptop. Not stolen it. Then Lenova will give a password to the tech, who will enter it, and enable you to use it. You'll probably be prompted by the tech, to enter your own password at this point.

Where is the harddrive on ibm thinkpad.

This image should help you get an id as to where your harddrive is located.

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-46425#main

Copy past into your browser windows if the link is broken.

If your trying to replace your hard drive, most newer laptops make this easy by placing the drive bay on the bottom of your computer.

Close the monitor and flip your laptop over. If your laptop allows you to replace your harddrive easily there should be a cover, screwed into the bottom with a symbol that indicates which one is the hard drive. To give you an example, mine is indicated by 3 disks overlaying each other.

NEED PASSWORDS TO ACCESS HARD DRIVE

Sharon, you have a extremly difficult problem.
Why is the laptop in for repair, is the laptop faulty, how do you know the hard drive is faulty when you cannot start up the laptop?

It appears that you have or someone has set up a power on password and possibly a password protection on the hard drive.
If you hard drive is faulty it is highly unlikely that you cannot retrieve any data off your hard drive with or without the passwords.
IBM ThinkPads laptops store the Power On password on an EEPROM chip and removing the BIOS battery cannot clear this password. there are no backdoor passwords that you can use. The passwords are used to prevent unauthorized access to the laptop and its data.

If there isn't a password on the hard disk, and the hard disk is not faulty, you can remove the hard drive and connect it to a working computer to read and copy off your data. I suggest you connect your hard drive using a USB hard drive adapter and connecting it to a working computer's USB port.

IBM states that if you don't know the Power On password, therefore you cannot get into the BIOS to remove the password, and you need to replace the motherboard (this is not cheap).
There is a way to hack into the laptop, it required some electronic experience to build a reader device, dismantle the laptop, solder it to the EEPROM chip, connect the output to a working computer, run a reader program, locate the password from this data, unsolder the wires, put the laptop back together and boot up and enter the password.
For detailed information go to www.allservice.ro/forum
I have successfully removed these passwords, it is a lot of work, and needs to be tackled by an experienced person.

Best of luck.

New harddrive

Check the connections and the drive settings (jumpers) to make sure its set to "Master, Stand alone". The IBM PC's autodetect's the HDD installed so if it doesn't read the HDD, there is a hardware problem.
Maybe is the Thinkpad interface faulty and the HDD you replaced is fine.
