Question about Acer Aspire 6920 Notebook PC

1 Answer

Hi. I have an Acer 6920G which is only 8-9 months old. However Lately, the battery discharges abnormally quickly. It starts with about 1.5 hours, and seems to run down at a sensible rate. But after around 10 mins, i'm told i only have 5 mins remaining. Could this be a battery problem or a reporting problem? Thanks in advance. Ry

First of all, you need to make sure your power adapter is providing enough power to both run the laptop & charge the battery. A very good way to do this is to compare your laptop voltage & ampere requirements (written on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop) with the voltage & ampere ratings of the power adapter. Voltages should be the same, or the power adapter's voltage about up to 0.5 volts more than the laptop's voltage rating. Amperage of the power adapter should be at least equal to or greater than the laptop's rating. It should never be less than the laptop's rating, or else the power adapter will be providing insufficient amperes to charge the battery. Of course, the power adapter's nominal amperage might be ok, but it degraded on usage. You can verify this by testing using a good or new power adapter.
If the battery did not charge using the new power adapter, take the battery off the laptop, & using a dry tooth brush, scrub in between the fins of the battery connector on the motherboard & on the battery it self, then put the battery back into the laptop & try again.
If this still did not resolve the problem, then the battery itself could be bad. Try it on another laptop, or try a good or new battery in your laptop.
If this did not work, there might be a possibility that the charging circuitry on the laptop's motherboard is defective & needs servicing. In order to do this, the laptop needs to be disassembled & the motherboard checked for defective/burned out components in the area near the DC jack. Any defective/burned out components found should be replaced, or you might need to replace the laptop's motherboard altogether

Make your Lithium Laptop Battery last longer.

Hello folks,

Although I usually offer advice on backing up files or recovering them, I have been asked a lot lately how my 3 year old laptop still runs 1:45mins on a standard battery when many peoples 1-2 year old laptops can barely last an hour.

Simply put, most people do one of two things wrong. Both are common misconceptions and easy to remedy. First I've heard countless people tell me they pop the battery out of their laptop and toss it in the desk drawer until needed, often months. Second I have been told by more people than I can count that they leave their laptop plugged in 24/7 for most of the year.

Bottom line, although popping it out and leaving it in the drawer is less harmful to it's lifespan, both ideas are wrong.

The shelf life of most unused lithium batteries is shorter when unused than ones being used properly. The lifespan of a battery that is constantly being trickle charged is even shorter.

Most batteries in modern laptops are 4-6 cells, designed to give about 2 hours of charge and should last 3-5 years with charge life starting to degrade in the third year.

A "stored battery" has only 3 years of shelf life due to extended times sitting discharged and one that is trickle charged 24/7 may burn out in as little as a year.

Many laptop manufacturers have taken measures to improve this but ultimately the best thing for your battery is to use it. If you currently run you laptop plugged in 24/7, unplug it every night after you shut it off, then when you start it in the morning, let it run an hour before plugging it back in. This will give the battery both down time and exercise.

If your battery is in a drawer somewhere for safe keeping, put it back in the laptop, run it down then charge it over night and run it down then recharge it one more time. Store it back in the drawer charged and repeat the cycle at least once a month.

These tips will help drastically improve you batteries performance over time. My 3 year old laptop only ever got 2 hours of battery life and still gets 1:45 with no power saving measures, give it a try.

Problems with new laptop battery for my Acer 6920G.

You can't force the battery with a higher charge to work without damaging the computer. If the battery is a direct replacement it should work. If your original charger is not capable of charging the battery you can consider a charger replacement but I suspect the original charger you where using was bad to begin with if that is the case. You can try locating a replacement charger but you need to make sure it is rated for computer so you don't damage the power system.

My acer aspire 5735Z wiil not stay charged for more than 1 hour when not one the charger and just shuts off even if battery indicator shows atleast 50% charge, is just a bad battery?

Batteries wear out with use and can be replaced easily with a new one.

If you laptop is more than one year old then most probably the battery is weak and cannot hold the charge. When a battery becomes weak its capacity to hold charge reduces considerably until you have to remove it to start the laptop (with charger only).

You can continue using it until the battery time drops to about 10 minutes. After that, simply replace it with a new one.

If the laptop is new and under warranty, you should contact warranty support asap.

To increase battery life place the laptop on a solid table where there is ample air flow beneath. Heat will destroy a battery faster such as when used on bed or your lap often.

Regarding you question about shutting down even when battery is 50% it could be due to following reasons:

  1. Power Settings within the control panel.
  2. The battery charge drops quickly so that it discharges very quickly when it is showing half. Remember that the indicator is an estimate and does not account for battery degradation over time.
  3. Other issues like over heating etc but please check first two points first.

Acer Extensa 5630EZ does not start

Not really sure--could be a motherboard problem. But you say the computer is less than 3 months old. That means it's still under warranty--so call their tech support. You paid for support when you bought the machine, so I would use it.

Acer N30 battery problem (even new battery does not last enough)

try checking your power saving options, you can drop down the backlight a little lower to extend battery life. Also you can lower down the volume of the system sound and check if the bluetooth is on, then turn it off. Recharge it and then check if the battery life extends. You also need to occasionally soft-reset the n30
