Question about Acer AL511 15" Flat Panel LCD Monitor

5 Answers

Acer AL511 15" I need advice in repairing this lcd monitor. I purchased used, faulty 15" display for reading email. Symptom was display flashes on, pictures comes, click, goes off. This repeats endlessly. I repaired this symptom in the past by replacing faulty capacitor on power board - in another display. Now I have replaced all 5 caps this power board has and symptom remains. Display green light comes on, picture comes for 1/2 second, backlight flashes on and off. green light goes off. Brand model Acer AL511 15" PK100007500 REV.1 - power board do not know if any help but images of power board http://ekse.pp.fi/acer/ Testing voltages from powerboard to mainboard, did not find a 12V rail. With power on only 3 5v and 3v. Yellow wire- which I suspect should be 12v reads 0.3 steady.

I found service manual for hitachi CLM154XW that uses same powersupply I've posted it on my server at http://ekse.pp.fi/d15d1798-e3ed-4df3-8fe...

Unfortunately troubleshooting in this service manual is in the order of REPLACE BOARD AND TRY AGAIN.

Please note that I'm not going to replace whole boards as the price of the display was only 4 euros, it is not worth it to spend 50 on a new power board.

  • Ekse Sep 28, 2010

Haven't received any solution or suggestions Yet.

Few notes. I noticed from the service manual that there possibly is no 12v rail that goes from psu to mainboard - looking at the pinout of the connector.

Hello Micro, Do you have any lcd monitor repair experience?

The problem and question is on the first - original comment.

Question: How do get the monitor working normally. What is faulty? What needs to be replaced?

-- Capacitors have been replaced from the powersupply, problem remains.

-- I've tried another set of backlights -- did not help

-No Not the whole boards, as I said in my comment, it is not worth it.

  • Ekse Sep 28, 2010

I appreciate the answer, but unfortunately it is not worth 5$ (of witch you would get 2$)

also I do not agree with having to replace all the major parts, (PSU/Inverter, Mainboard, Backlight)

It is clear that backlight tubes are ok, problem appears to be either psu or mainboard. Which can be repaired.

I purchased this faulty monitor to repair myself, I'm not going to scrap it after 6 hours of receiving it.

  • Ekse Sep 28, 2010

Rulds, the inverter board is part of the powersupply which cost 45$ shipping international. As I said this is not worth it considering I purchased this faulty display for 4$.

Sorry but you did not offer anything useful I can't accept your solution, it does absolutely noting to help me get forward with this repair.

  • Ekse Sep 28, 2010

So far the "advice" has been useless, quick, few line answers, Hoping to get a real professional with LCD repair experience to answer this one. This will probably end in a refund if these few liners keep on coming.

Micromatikal, for begging a 4 star rating, you deserve the 1 star. I'll surely post it to you again if you have someone remove it from your account.

Please if possible come back to the question here and rate it 4 thumbs. It looks like the answer helped you, but for some reason it doesn't rate it 4 thumbs unless you come back a second time and specify 4 out of 4 thumbs. I hope you will do this for me. Thanks Tim

Not necessarily, but the 1 thumb is killing me here. Seriously even bumping it to 2 would be a great benefit :(, I wasn't trying not to help you that's for sure.

  • Ekse Oct 11, 2010

To me it seems you placeholded in as the first poster just to get the 2$ incase no solutions where accepted. Thats why I made sure I got refunded so you wouldn't get the 2$ for playing dumb. No you offered noting to me, your not getting a 4 thumb rating. Welcomejee got his 4 thumbs because he was helping me over email for free. I didn't just give him 4 thumbs because he posted something silly.

You will not be able to repair this for less than cost of a new monitor, just bought one, a 20 inch and was only $98.00 after rebate, the brand was ASUS.

This is not a solution as i cant give one which i can guarantee. I would advice you scrap the monitor this is because due to my experience once flat panel monitors begin to show signs and symptoms such as this regardless of what repairs are effected on them a different problem just happens to come up.
The only sure way to get this monitor functioning fine is if all the major components in it are replaced and this would usually cost more than a new monitor. Sorry for my response but it is a honest opinion.
Hope this solution is helpful?

The issue is one of the inverters that is faulty you would not be able to tell by voltages. The only way to tell is with a test board that you would not have otherwise only repair shops would have a test board.

I know this might not be much of any help but my recommendations would be replace the inverter board there pretty darn cheap and will not break the bank.

please do click the accept button for my efforts.

Screen is black

If the notebook appears to boot up and the LED hard disk light flashes then :-
You may have a faulty inverter or defective CCFL lamp. A faulty CCFL lamp may have the following symptom: Screen flashes on and off or displays reddish pink hue. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering and/or with dim display or appear black. Picture flickers on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replace the CCFL lamp.
To determine if the video card or the LCD is faulty, connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight or a faulty inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp. Usually the CCFL lamp fails before the inverter.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

MY ACER LAPTOP SCREEN TURNS ON BUT THE SCREEN IS BLACK

To determine if you have a video card problem or the LCD screen is at fault.
Connect an external monitor to the video port on the laptop and boot up your laptop, if you get a display on the external monitor then your video card is OK and you have a faulty LCD.

When you power your laptop without an external monitor and have a close look at the LCD screen at and you see a slight image then the fault is with the backlighting panel. This fault could be a faulty inverter or a faulty CCFL backlight lamp.

Defective CCFL backlight may has the following symptom:
  • Screen flashs on red/pink and off.
  • Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal.
  • Picture flickering with dim display.
  • Picture flickering on and off.
The inverter can be easily replaced so can the CCFL lamp (but requires a lot more work)
