Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

I have a Frigidaire FRS26R4A side-by-side refrigerator that was purchased new in 2002 and this past May, I hear the compressor trying to start, but won't start. I unplugged the refrigerator, moved all items out, and called for service. When I plug the refrigerator back in, it seems to work normally. I cancelled the service call and let it run for a couple of days until I'm sure it is working before moving the food back in. It was fine over the summer, but now it is acting up again. The temporary fix would be to unplug the refrigerator for a few hours and plug it back in. It seems the compressor is not dead (whew!), but something that controls it is. Am I correct? Are there parts I can replace with normal tools? I'd rather fix it than to add the whole refrigerator to the waste stream. Considering that I did not buy an extended warranty all this time, fixing it should still put me ahead of the game. Thanks!

I bought an appliance timer and set it to turn on and off every 4 hours as a stopgap measure, and that seems to work, though I shut off the water line in case the fridge warms up enough to melt the ice.

After a lot of searching for the replacement parts, I replaced both the PTC Relay (5304468029) and the Run Capacitor (5304464438) , but I am still getting this problem. Does that mean the compressor is the problem now???

Should I just hold out with the appliance timer until a big appliance sale comes up?

Yes you are right. There is a starting capacitor that is bad. Or a relay that pulls in to start the compressor. I would check your relay. It will be wired to the compressor. It sounds like either the relay is not pulling in or the capacitor is weak and not giving the compressor enough juice to start. You can test the relay by checking to see if you have power on both sides of the relay. I would say that the starting capacitor is your problem though.

Refrigerator runs but dosen't cool. Can here it running but I don't hear any clicking sounds like the compressor is trying to start

Lets try doing this by plulling away from wall and unplug the power cord. Remove lower cover over the compressor and with power disconnected feel top of compressor. Tell me if cool, warm or too hot to keep hand on top. Click on The Point and Click Banner below=> Enter this number into search box FRS26R4AQ2

Then enter model FRS26R4AQ2 into search box and click the search button. This will help me guide you through solving this problem. Now click Here=> FRS26R4A That will show a large view of that series of Frigidaire brands.
At the moment I am focusing on the compressor because when you hear fans running they tend to hide the sounds from compressor. I want to see if the relay or start/run capacitor are OK first. Please review and respond, Appliance 911, Sea Breeze

Stopped cooling

Best to unplug the refrigerator now and let compressor cool. The internal overload will be damaged if power remains on and trying to start. We need to test the compressor and start components before you buy anything, Let me know Sea Breeze

My compressor will not run.

The start capacitor could be bad. Also the compressor could be worn out. If compressor starts and runs then stops and become hot makes me think the compressor is defective. How old is your refrigerator? Even so compressors go bad. Thanks, Seabreeze

You probably should replace the start relay before it burns out the compressor terminals.

Frigidaire FRS26R4A Vibrating Noise

Finally called a service technician. He said the compressor was bad and needs replacing. Fortunately, I'm in the 2nd - 5th year of my limited warranty so parts and labor are covered. He also said that the FRS26R4A is "junk" and it helps to support his family.

  • no, it should be around $300-$400. but i would consider replacing the machine b4 i would spend $700.
  • has the whole compressor kit for your refrigerator for $165.80. comes with start switch, tubing, new filter and everything. fd082f7.jpg it shouldn't take more than an hour to change the compressor and recharge the system. 134a freon is about $10 for the amount you need.

Fridge / Freezer no longer cooling FR26R4A

  • usually if the compressor is bad then you will hear the start switch clicking on and off trying to start the compressor.
  • or when they do run they get very hot and turn off.
  • compressors are $120-230 retail, just for the part.
  •  i would try a new start switch, they are cheap and easy to change.
