burning smell is because the drum is not rolling and the motor is trying to turn, hopefully it did not damage the motor: more then likely it the drum rollers/glides, might want to check the idler arm here is a website that will help. depending on fast you need your dryer a good and cheap place to buy parts is on eBay, of course they can be purchased locally, Good Luck Tim:

Maytag MDE9206AYW will not heat. What do I need

I assume it is a gas dryer. Turn it on and if no clicking sound is heard within 30 seconds the spark ignitor needs a replacement. If it is an electric dryer you need to check the relay for the burner system first

The motor capacitor is burned. You can replace it yourself. It's on the motor. Take it down to a motor shop and they will have a new one. (electric motor repair shop)

My dryer will not run, when I push the start

WITH YOUR DOOR OPEN ENGAGE THE DOOR SWITCH AND TRY TO START IT HAVE AN ASSISTANT START IT WHILE YOU HELP THE DRUM TURN. IF IT START TO TURN ON IT'S OWN THEN I WOULD SAY YOUR MOTOR MIGHT BE BAD OR TOO WEAK. IT MAY ALSO BE A BAD DOOR SWITCH

Maytag electric

Yes, I would replace the starter switch...Also, there is a relay next to the starter switch(behind panel) that may be on the blink.. Try switch first as they are cheap.. The Repay retails for around $50.00. Goodluck!
