DVI to VGA connection problem

Hi all... the monitor I use for my htpc has just died. I'm attempting to use my work laptop (nc6000) as a monitor for my htpc (very) temporarily. I have a DVI to VGA cable that I have connected from my htpc's graphics card DVI out to my laptop's VGA. I thought function + F4 might enable my laptop to display my htpc signal. Is this at all possible, or is the VGA connection on my laptop an out (only for use with projectors etc)? Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

I think you can use it only for the projectors etc and you should not use as monitor by this way

Can I hook up a HP L2245wg monitor to a Hp envy laptop

Probably not very easily. The monitor only supports VGA 15-pin and DVI-D video connections. Although you don't specify which ENVY model you have, most only have HDMI and/or DisplayPort outputs. You would need an HDMI-to-DVI-D adapter/converter for the video, and, of course, DVI-D and VGA do not support sound, although it appear the monitor does not internal speakers anyway. You would be better served using a monitor with HDMI input(s) with this device.

Rgb connection stopped working on laptop

Instructions
    • 1 Decide if you want to watch the television on your computer or use the TV as a larger monitor. If you want to view the contents of the TV on your laptop, you need a video card connected to to the computer. These cards can either be inserted through the express PCI card slot on the laptop, or via USB cable. Make sure the video tuner card supports component video.
    • 2 Connect the DVI-to-component cable into the DVI port if you want to use the TV as a large monitor for your laptop. However, if you have a VGA port, plug the VGA-to-component cable into the VGA port.
    • 3 Plug the RGB component cables into the component side of the DVI- or VGA-to-component cable. If you want to watch the TV on your computer, insert the RGB cables into the TV video card.
    • 4 Plug the other end of the RGB component cables into the TV. If you are using the TV as a monitor, plug the cables into the "Component In" ports. However, if you are sending the TV signal to the computer, plug the cables into the "Component Out" port (the other end of the DVI- or VGA-to-component cable that you connected to your computer in Step 2).
    • 5 Power on the TV. If you are using the TV as a computer monitor, press the "Video" button until "Component Video" appears on the screen. If you are watching TV on your computer, launch the television viewing software that came with the TV tuner card. You can now see the contents of the TV on your computer.

Why is the dvi connection not working wih the monitor or do i need a hdmi connection?

On the laptop, did you "enable" video-output to the DVI port?
Most laptops have 3 modes:
* output only to the internal LCD screen
* output only to the external VGA/DVI/HDMI port
* output to both internal and external ports.

What manufacturer of PC laptop?
What model-number?
The key-sequence for choosing the mode depends on which computer you have.

Over last 3 years screen has become progressively darker, particularly on the left hand side. It's difficult to see. I was thinking about buying a separate monitor, but not sure what cables I would need to...

Sounds like a backlight problem. Backlights can be replaced but it all depends on the make/model of laptop you have. Connecting an external monitor to your laptop also depends on the type of connection you have on the laptop.

Most (if not all) will have a VGA output which requires a standard 15pin VGA cable. Newer laptops might have DVI or Mini-DVI. Some even have HDMI. So ultimately, the type of cable you need really depends on the type(s) of output your laptop is able to display and the types of inputs your monitor supports.

If your laptop has a VGA port, your Vizio needs to have a VGA port too so you can use a standard VGA monitor cable.

If your laptop has a DVI port, you hook it up to the Vizio using a DVI-to-HDMI cable.

And if your laptop has an HDMI port, you hook it up using a standard HDMI cable.

Hope this helps.

Intel, ATI,Nvidia have tools also to set up,

1. Yes, the monitor will just display the resolution set by your laptop.
2. There should be a VGA port on your laptop, it's a trapezoid shape with 3 rows of 5 holes and usually blue. Since your monitor only has a DVI cable, you need to get a DVI to VGA adapter to be able to plug your monitor into this spot.
