Question about GE JVM3660 Microwave Oven

Grinding noise coming from under the turntable when operating. How do I access the drive mechanism?

Checked out the installation instructions and found that my above-the-cooktop mounted GE microwave is supported on its rear bottom edge by the wall mount and the top of the unit's case is anchored to the underside of the cabinets. Removing the bottom panel's screws allowed that panel to hinge downward against the rear wall. Found the turntable motor was OK. The grinding noise has to be coming from the cyclatron unit, and I will followup with warranty service. The unit is still heating normally...just makes a horrible noise!

My microwave makes a grinding noise when running and the turntable doesn't work.

Possible there is friction within the drive , the shaft or the motor. You can remove and RESET the drive. Remove the motor , MANUALLY check the motion of the mechanism which will confirm the case. You c an reset using a bit of lubrication.

It appears that the noise is coming from the the turning or spin-

The turntable system consists of the motor, the coupler, the turntable support with rollers, and the tray.

You can see and hear a video of how a turntable motor should sound when you rotate it by hand.

You probably have a bad motor.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

Microwave turntable is loud and clunky sounding.

If the unit is brand new as you say then it is covered under the warranty and the 800# for Bosch is in your paperwork that came with it.

It sounds like the glass platen (turntable) hub is either binding or else the drive mechanism itself either has a bad tooth on the main gear or tooth wheel. Some may still use a chain type drive mechanism as well.

If you call that 800 number - the customer service dept there will advise you as to what needs to happen next. It's possible they will either replace or repair at their expense.

Who installed the unit?

Let me know?

Best regards,

Frank

Many thanks to e3enigma above! I removed the synch motor under the turntable; all other microwave functions work fine and the grinding noise is gone, hooray! A trip to the appliance parts store tomorrow for a replacement synchronous motor and all should be well. Thanks again!

The turntable makes grinding niose when engaged

That model number doesn't ring a bell. Is that right? Is it foreign?

Chances are the coupler and/or turntable support will be damaged or warped.

Also on some brands, the "packing" (often a rubber grommet) must be replaced.

If the noise goes away when you turn the turntable off, it sounds like you have a turntable drive motor that is going bad. They are fairly easy to replace and not terribly expensive. You can access the motor by leaving the oven in place and UNPLUGGED. Remove the bottom panel. You will need to remove the turntable coupler (the plastic piece that spins the glass carousel) and remove a few screws in order for the motor to come out through the bottom of the oven. There should also be a quick connect plug that plugs into the motor. The motor runs about $35 and the turntable coupler (if you wish to replace it as well), runs about $8. The part numbers are 769741 and 769278, respectively at repairclinic.com. I hope this helps you.
