the screen goes black and still hear the sound, also the picture flickers as though there is a short, the colors change to all red or green have already changed the lamp. could it be the direct tv dvr box?

I have the same problem with an HLR4667W. Image goes black, however the sound is still on, the TV responds to channel changes... but the image never comes back (only black). Also, I have verified that the bulb remains on (by looking through the back vent). So it's NOT the bulb. I have replaced the color wheel, then 1.5 months later this black out issue arrived. My only fix is to power off the TV, wait a few min, then power it back on. Works normal for an undetermined amount of time before it happens again.

Samsung 50" DLP TV turns itself off

I had the same problem which also included the picture having streaks of red in it sometimes too. I found that both problems were due to the TV getting too hot inside. I bought a $7 small 4" fan from Walmart and pointed it at the back "door" of the TV (where the bulb can be replaced). Both problems have disappeared which I think is due to not letting the interior get too hot.

Not sure if there is an internal fan to cool the parts inside, but if there is it is not working well enough.

Your model has a maximum resolution of 720p. What you might want to do is make sure that both your cable/sat box and game stations are outputting at no more than 720 resolution. It's easy to assume that all HDTVs may accept a higher signal, and while they might, some of the scene changes or handshakes may make that operation cause the symptoms you describe.

Bightness Change

It sounds like your lamp is going bad. The lamp part number is listed as "lamp code" on a sticker located on the left side of the set. Use this number to grab a replacement off ebay.
