Question about Kenmore Refrigerators

Open Question

My refrigerator, Kenmore Model 253.71832104, was put into storage for about a year and a half. I took it out of storage and plugged it in, the lights come on, the fan runs, but I do not hear the compressor kick on, and it does not cool. . . the coils on the back also do not get warm. Is there a way for me to trouble shoot this before I do a service call. . . ie. if it leaked freon, would the compressor try to kick on, or would that be an obvious different problem. . . I have located the capacitor, but I am not sure how I would test it myself. thanks. Mark Brown

SOURCE: Not cool at all!

If the compressor is running you should be cooling unless there is a major loss of refrigerant. What we do for these complaints is to first let the refer run for a few hours then pull the interior rear panel off the freezer section back wall and check the frost pattern on the coils. It should be a nice white frost pattern all the way across the coils (no bare alum. showing and no mass of ice either). If you don't have that pattern then there is a sealed system issue. If you have a massive block of ice all over the coils then you have a defrost cycle issue (not getting proper air circ. due to the block-o-ice thing). Let us know what you find... oh, you can sometimes find the leak by looking for oily residue from the compressor lubricating oil (it leaks out where the gas does also).

SOURCE: Kenmore Elite refrigerator stops cooling - Relay keeps cycling

The compressor is locked up. Basically it is stuck. You can pick up at the local appliance parts store a hard start relay, Home Depot ,Lowes, or or those guys wont have it. Its not too expensive and is worth trying because your only other option is you need to replace the compressor. The part is called a kick start or hard start, the guy at the parts store will know what you are talking about. It is simple to connect and has the wiring directions on it. Sometimes this is all it takes. I have been able to get a stuck compressor to go by placing a short 2x4 on it and whack it with a hammer a few times. This is only a temporary fix though, as it will eventually lock up again, but emergency situation this saved the food. If the fridge has a fan back there make sure it works too, it may have been the original cause. Good luck.

SOURCE: Frigidaire stand alone Refrigerator won't cool Fans and Compressor work

Ended up having a freon leak in tubing around door. Luckly the warranty was 5 years in sealed system. New one was FREE.

SOURCE: Kenmore compressor cycles and does not cool

It sounds like you have a stuck compressor or bad start capacitor.

I have a Kenmore Elite Refrigerator that has ER 1F on the display. Where can I find a manual with error codes or can you tell me what this means?

Hello Ken;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

The 1F code means there is a communication problem between the control board and the freezer fan.

Your freezer fan my have failed or it my be blocked by ice build-up.

So, It is one of these parts:
1.) Freezer fan motor
2.) Defrost heater
3.) Defrost timer.

You did not provide a model number so I can not provide you with parts numbers.

Although, I am retired, I do maintain a small customer base. If you live near Glen Burnie, MD, call me 443-306-1362

I HAVE A KENMORE MODEL # 253.63732300 TOP FREEZER REFRIGERATOR. IT HAS BEEN IN STORAGE FOR 2 YEARS. I GOT IT OUT AND PLUGGED IT UP TO USE IT BUT NOW THE FREEZER & REFRIGERATOR WILL NOT GET COLD. WHAT...

Was the refrig on its side at any time during movement and if so , was it left standing for 24 hrs before turning on ?
Check the fans to see if frozen (rust ) from the humidity when unplugged . 1 in the freezer and 1 in the rear , cooling the compressor .
Try tapping on the thermostat , and see if refrig starts . Not a slight tap (except at first) but not a heavy tap either .
Excellent organization of your question , with the complete model number . Most do not give the first 3 numbers , therfore , unable to help them .
