Question about Magic Chef MCBR440 Compact Refrigerator

Open Question

Mcbr415s magic chef won't cool ruby2000ad@aol.com This refrigerator stopped cooling a year ago. The light works. I tapped and pushed in on the knob. I have unscrewed the thermostat, but have not disconected any of the wiring. I have a multimeter. Can I use it while the thermostat is still connected? How do I do this? THank you.

SOURCE: MAGIC CHEF CTF1920ARA - Freezer works, Refrig. portion does not.

Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.

  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.

SOURCE: Magic Chef MCBR415S cabinet get's very HOT!

* Is your compressor motor running all the time ?
* have you checked and cleaned your condenser coils at the back ?
* Is there sufficient airflow around your refrigerator (especially at the back) ?
* Is your refrigerator and freezer cooling properly ?

Sounds like your unit is working overtime - it will usually get hot like that when compressor motor has been running a long time and heat does not dissipate properly at the back - it also gets hot after a defrost cycle - it should NOT be hot at all times. CHeck to make sure your temps are correct to rule out a stuck defrost cycle timer - your refrigerator should not be hotter than 40F and your freezer's temp between 0F-10F, the optimal temp is 0F.

SOURCE: Magic Chef MCBR445W1 seems like it dosen,t stop

Hello,

Most times this is a bad cold control, but there are other things to check for. Make sure the condenser fan is working and the coils are not covered with dust. A separated heat exchanger ( small capillary tubing soldered to the large suction line ) can separate from one another and make the fridge run too long. - tape tubing back together. A poor working evaporator fan motor could also make the fridge run too long and freeze - replace the fan motor. An inefficient compressor or refrigeration system could make the fridge run too long and freeze - have a service tech check this out. A misaligned control settings, make sure the air damper and cold control have not been bumped and are out of normal settings. Stuck open air diffusers or air dampers are becoming more and more common for allowing too much air to be blown into the fresh food section and freezing things. On all frost free fridge's the freezer temp air is blown into the fresh food section, if you have "easy" to freeze items ( eggs, veggies in water, etc ) in front of or under where the freezer temp air comes out, they could freeze - store them in a different spot. Doors not closing properly making the fridge run too long is something else to check for.

Check on the cold control if faulty, replace the cold control, not having found any other problem, do check on plastic air deflector at the top rear of the frig had been knocked off. replaced it if faulty. As you know, the deflector directs the freezer air toward the front of the frig and the rear of the cold control, which is now functioning properly.
Good luck.......

I have a magic chef freezer MCCF5WBX the power light is on, but the run light is not on and it is not working

Had the same problem for the same unit. In my case, the theromostat was sticking. Mine was still under warranty so I called Magic Chef, who in turn gave me to a local repair person. In order to save him time to travel out for a diagnosis, he asked me to tap on the control to see if the run light comes on. Sure enough the run light came on and cooled the freezer. Try tapping on the unit control to see if it kicks on. My email address is mearlj@aol.com. I'd like to know if it works.
