Question about Samsung RS2556 Side by Side Refrigerator

2 Answers

Error code "-" on refrigerator side. Refrigerator side will not maintain temperature, instead cycles from 38 degrees up to 65 degrees and back down every few minutes to an hour. I have been trying to get this refrigerator to operate properly for the past 2 months and have spent about $400 for parts and labor without any resolution. I am completely frustrated and do not want to spend any more money unless it is just a very little bit and we do manage to solve this problem.

I am still working with the same refrigerator repair person and he hasn't charged me again. I was looking for information on the error code "-" on my RS2556SH refrigerator temperature indicator. You gave me and my repair person no information on this error code. Please review what you have available and provide additional (as complete as possible) information.
    Thank you.

The repair person that I was using was the only one that I could find that was willing to work on this model refrigerator. I heard from someone else that either the thermostat or the sensor in the refrigerator side were defective. Please offer me a real solution besides saying that someone else should look at the problem! Otherwise, I personally will not consider you to be knowledgeable in this subject.

If the " - " is displayed on the refrigerator side only that is error code 7 and is staying this:

Error occurs and is displayed when regarding the R compartment defrosting heater, there is an electric wire cut, short-circuit, contact failure, sensor housing missing, or defective temperature fuse. A defect is
displayed if defrosting is not finished after continuous heating for more than 70 min, for the R compartment.

Most all of the above are related to the evaporator and the Adaptive Defrost Control.

Possible causes are Items 38 and 39 of this link:

Item 38 is the thermostat and Item 39 is the sensor.
Item 38 sends the signal to the control board that 60 Deg F has been reached and to terminate the defrost cycle. Item 39 will also do the same thing via a second circuit.
Per the service manual there are 2 thermistors and 2 thermostats in both the freezer compartment and the freezer compartment. Any of these thermistors or Bi-metal themostats can cause the fault your seeing.

This is alll defrost circuit related.

The only way to troubleshoot is by opening the evaporator accesses and reading them with a meter.

Having said all of that.... as an in home appliance repair tech, I really believe you have a valid CALL BACK for unfinished repair service.

I will tell you that as a technician that call backs occasionally happen (2 or 3 times a year) but... the shop eats the labor and the service call because WE failed to correct the original complaint. We would only charge for the additional parts. In this case I think the most expensive part you might have to purchase is just over $22.00. I can understand your frustration. I really believe you have a valid call back unfinished service complaint here.

I would recommend you contact the service company and give them the details. I would quote repair invoice numbers when I made the call with the original compaint that STILL is not corrected.

I do not have a problem saying this about any service provider that did not finish the job with the customer being satisfied AND the discrepancy corrected. THEY OWE YOU THE RETURN for repair Free labor and service. Any reputable service provider would do this in a heartbeat. Make the call.........!

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

    Correction to this statement:

Per the service manual there are 2 thermistors and 2 thermostats in both the freezer compartment and the freezer compartment. Any of these thermistors or Bi-metal themostats can cause the fault your seeing.

    It should read:
Per the service manual there are 2 thermistors and 2 thermostats in both the "fresh food" compartment and the "freezer compartment." Any of these thermistors or Bi-metal themostats can cause the fault your seeing.

Very strange, sounds like some major problems still at work here. Nothing about this will be too inexpensive I assure you. So it sounds like you did have a service person previously repair this unit, when you say you have spent money on labor costs... Why not call that same person and tell them it is still having issues? They should be obligated to fix it under the same service...

Let me know, but it is still having major problems for certain,

It's hard to say what caused it to display -, but something just needs to be reset on that door panel. The repair person you speak of, can't they take a look at the panel and reset it?

    Tim Grayson Sep 29, 2010

Well I understand, but I was simply saying if you have a repair person there in the flesh he will be much more equipped to determine the issue than I - trying to diagnose it remotely through the internet. Was this problem not present when the repair person was there? Was it caused by the repair person? I definitely will help you, but just don't understand why you'd want a live repair person and internet help....

Do cooling vents ice over if water filter needs replaced

It's more likely that the automatic defrost system is defective, or the heating wire for the defrost drain. It's also possible that the temperature controls are set too low. Try zero degrees for the freezer and 38 degrees for the refrigerator side. If that works without problems you might put the freezer at minus two degrees and leave the refrigerator at 38.
Another possible fix is to put a longer heating wire in the drain.

Side by Side ModelsIf foods, such as fruits and vegetables, in the refrigerator are freezing, it can be caused by several things. First, check the controls. They should be set at "C" and "5" or "5" and "5". The proper fresh food temperature is between 38 and 42 degrees Fahrenheit. The freezer should be between 0 and 8 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • If food in the bottom of the refrigerator is freezing, this could be caused by a refrigerator not having enough food to absorb the cold air.
  • If food in the door is freezing, move the door bins up or down so they are one notch away from freezer vents (Side by Side models only).
  • The fresh food control should be at the normal setting of 5.
Freezer on Top Models
First, check the controls. They should be set at "C" and "5" or "5" and "5". The proper fresh food temperature is between 38 and 42 degrees Fahrenehit. The freezer should be between 0 and 8 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Since the cold air coming into the fresh food section originates in the freezer above, the rear of the top shelf will be the coldest spot in the fresh food area. Avoid placing delicate items that freeze easily on the back half of this shelf.
  • If food is freezing in the produce (fruits and vegetables) or meat pan, it may be that the temperature controls are not set high enough. Since cold air naturally falls, the pans can get too cold if the refrigerator is not running long enough to maintain good air circulation. Adjust both controls up one notch.

My GE Adora seams to be breaking down. Freezer is not freezing and temperature in both, Freezer and Refrigerator is dropping. HAVE reset the temperatures to GE's recommendation of 0 Degrees and 38...

One thing you can do is make sure condenser coils have plenty of area around them (nothing lying against refrigerator) to prevent air flow. If possible vacuum and clean condenser coils and make sure freezer door is completely closed.

How to set a temperture

By keep your refrigerator or freezer too cold, it unnecessarily wastes electricity. The recommended temperature is 37 to 40 degrees for the fresh food compartment of the refrigerator. The recommended temperature for the freezer compartment is 5 degrees. If you have a separate freezer for long-term food storage, it should kept at 0 to -5 degrees.

The following steps below is how to set the temperature of your refrigerator.

The first thing you must know is that your refrigerator should be set at 37-38 degrees. Anything at 40 or higher and you are risking food born illness (food poisoning) or spoiling your food.

Step 2
Place your magnetic thermometer in the refrigerator.

Step 3
Set your dial on your refrigerator to the second lowest setting. (If your refrigerator is already equipped with a digital thermostat, simply set it for 37 or 38 degrees and do not move on to the next step)

Step 4
After 2 hours, check your thermometer reading. If your reading is 38 degrees, there is no need to go higher and you are ready to put your groceries in. Be sure not to open and close your refrigerator during these two hours or your temperature reading will be incorrect.

If your reading is higher than 38 degrees, move your dial up to the next coldest setting and repeat the steps every two hours until you reach the correct temperature for your refrigerator.

Step 5
Once you have reached the correct refrigeration temperature for your refrigerator, place the magnetic thermometer in the refrigerator permanently and watch for changes.

Typically, your refrigerator temperature will need to be adjusted with the seasons, a higher setting in the summer and a lower setting in the winter.

Hope this helpout and take care.

Refrigerator will not maintain proper temperature

Check in the back of the fridge section; there is normally a control that is provided for 'balancing' the cold air between the two sections. That coolled air is distributed by a concealed fan that may not be running; you should be able to ear or feel the air movement when the unit is in a cooling cycle.

Cooler wont cool below 48 degrees.

Keep a thermometer handy. (adjust temperature control knob accordingly)
Periodically monitor temperatures inside your cooler. (adjust as necessary)
Keep the refrigerator door closed as much as possible to avoid temperature fluctuations

The temperature of the refrigerator compartment is
controlled by adjusting/setting the thermostat control
knob, located on the ceiling of the refrigerator
To start the refrigerator, and achieve maximum
cooling quickly;
• Turn the temperature control knob (using a coin
or screwdriver) clockwise to the furthest
(maximum) setting on the darker blue section of
the graduated control dial.
• Allow the refrigerator to run at this setting for 3~4
• When maximum cooling is achieved, turn back
the temperature control knob setting to the 2:00
o'clock position on the graduated blue control
• Correct cooling temperature is a key factor to
consider in storing and dispensing draught beer.
• Optimum temperature for serving draught beer is
between 34ºF ~ 38ºF.(1ºC ~ 3ºC)
• To maintain temperatures ranging between
34ºF ~ 38ºF.(1ºC ~ 3ºC) We recommend the
thermostat knob be positioned at the "2:00
o'clock" setting on the graduated blue control dial.
• To turn off the refrigerator, (no cooling) rotate the
control knob to the "0" position.
