Most of the time with laptops that wont charge the issue is at the connector either at the cord or where the connector is soldered to the motherboard.  Before you get to any of that please check the obvious first. is the power supply plugged in, does it have it a green light, is it lit. You can try taking the model number of your laptop and finding a replacement power cord like one made by targus.  if that doesnt do it, you will have to take your laptop to a qualified technician for repair.

If the on board voltage regulating chips are no good and your battery won't charge, MAKE SURE IT IS NOT THE BATTERY THAT HAS FAILED, then the only alternative is an external battery charger, or a new motherboard. External units run from $60-$80 but they will solve your mobile needs. Motherboards are around $160

But, like I said make sure the battery is not the problem. Most batteries have a life span of 500 charging cycles.

Can you help me fix my Dell Studio 1558 laptop? It doesn't boot?

Dropping a laptop is never good news. Have you tried to Cold-Start the laptop, unplug. remove battery, leave battery out for now, plug in try to start normally. If that fails, Did you remove the HDD and reseat? The damage from the drops may have jarred something loose. Do you get activity, light blinking, from the HDD? The DVD/CD?

My laptop wont start

If you are sure that your charger and battery are working as usual. The possible cause is the laptop lid switch.

If it is broken, you may have power but your screen may not come on.
This is usually a little button or mechanism located close to the lid hinge that turns on or off your screen when your lid is open or closed respectively.Normally the operator does not push this button. These are fragile and broken easily on some laptop models. Sometimes these can be fixed, more often they will require replacements. If you aren't an expert repair person, get a technician to repair/replace it for you. Opening up laptops is a very delicate operation and much more difficult to repair than desktops. It may be worth it to spend the money for repair.

I left my 6month old pb laptop on. Barge overnight a d when I woke up the next morning there was, what currys said, was an internal crack on my screen, could this happen due to overheating,my pc is only...

Wow, what a bummer. I've never heard of a laptop cracking the screen just because it was left on overnight. Did you leave it on with the Lid closed? Even if you did I would think at some point the laptop would go into sleep or hibernation mode to turn itself down to minimal power usage. Can you see where the crack is? I mean can you open your internet browser and where the crack is things are not visible? If so you surely have a crack, but i still can't believe leaving it on caused it. Anyway since curry won't help you get a quote from your local computer shops, or ask curry for a repair quote, then try the guys at http://www.generalsystemsconsulting.com They will repair it and ship it back Fedex or UPS and their price will probably beat any quote including the shipping charge.

My laptop was one year old last december. my battery stopped charging the same week it became one year and the guarantee expired. having no exta time, i took the laptop to the store 5 days after...

I would strongly suggest the good old battery 'hard reset'...

1.) Turn off laptop
2.) Unplug it from power supply
3.) Hold down the power button for a minute
4.) Plug it back into the power supply
5.) Power it on and wait to see if the battery icon is showing up and charging

This has resolved a few of these ghost battery issues on some of my clients laptops! If that fails, please provide the exact model number of the Gateway laptop and which operating system you're using and we'll see if we can't find another fix.

Hope this helps,
Joe

Can`t get further than switch on

It sounds like the BIOS is no longer valid.
It will have to be re-flashed.
If you are brave enough, download the bios from Toshiba and reinstall it. They have instructions on their site.
Good luck.

I set up my wireless yesterday and the notebook said the battery was charged so I unplugged it. When I woke up this morning the notebook was completely dead - nothing happenned when I pressed the power...

Plug it back in. This is usually an indication that something in the notebook was running all night and drained the battery.
Perhaps the computer did not go to sleep or hibernate.
Charge it up and use it during the day to see how long the battery lasts.

HP Pavillion DV93100 - does NOT power up

Seems that you have one of the RECALLED laptops from HP the folks at BB should have mentioned that before they charged you for a temporary if not futile fix, as the mainboard overheats to the point of inevitable FAILURE!
(although HP will not really admit culpability either)

Do a Google search on HP dv9000 series recall, thousand of others also share your plight.

Power supply malfunction?

Remove the battery and try the cord again. Complete with the moving it around. It sounds like you have already diagnosed the loose DC plug adaptor, but the battery could have gone terminal.
