No, you need to buy a wireless router and connect wireless router to cable modem. Non cable modems do not work on cabled wireless network. If you buy cable router, buy either a router with no modem integrated or a modem/router for cable network, this last one may be best option, but it needs to be configured. Ask to retailer which models are ok with your broadband provider.

I'm guessing that you have a cable modem a dlink router with wifi and a computer, right? If you connect the cable modem to the computer you have internet. You shouild also have wfi but the wifi will not give you internet because it is disconnected from the modem. The Dlink has to be connected to the modem but it will also need to be configured. To *** that you will need help from your cable company. The connections should be. Modem connected to the outside world. Dlink connected to the Modem. Computer connected to the Dlink by either wifi or Ethernet.
If you have a wireless router and it is connected to the DSLor cable modem then -
To connect to your wireless router, the router needsits wireless settings to be configured with the SSID, encryption key etc., alsothe wireless cards in all the laptops/computers needs to be configured withthese router's wireless settings. Then the laptops/desktop computers cancommunicate with your wireless router and access the Internet via the DSL or cable modem.
unplug and replug the cable modem and the router. You don't need the setup disc just type the ip address of the router into your browser. most dlinks are 192.168.0.1 and password is admin (unless you changed it). For a cable modem you want it set to DHCP configuration.
If you connect the computer directly to the modem, does it work? If that works then the modem is working. Now connect the computer to the router and the modem to the router. You will need to open the set up page of the router to check the settings of the router. You can set up the router without the CD also. It is very easy. I have dlink 2100ap wireless router any body had access my wireless network but i want to ristrect network just like network passkey how can i give my dlink 2100ap wireless router pass key please give me reply
The SSID setting is part of the DLink wireless setting.
To configure the DLInk wireless/router from new, you may need to connect the DLink wireless/router the laptop with a 10baseT cable, then open your browser and enter the URL address http:/192.168.0.1 The default login = admin, no password required. Unless you have previously altered the default settings.
You should configure the DLink wireless with a different SSID from the default one and set it up with encryption preferrably WAP.
You should also setup a password for the admin login, so to prevent someone from hacking into your wireless/router to change your settings and steal your Internet access.
You would need to setup the wireless card in the laptop to have the same wireless/router settings eg. SSID and encryption.
You can now remove the LAN cable and connect to the Internet by wireless.
All this information is in your manual.
The way mine is hook up:
