Question about Nikon D40x Digital Camera

1 Answer

I have a Nikon D40x digital camera. The problem began when the screen began showing some type of diagram over the picture I had just taken. The camera then started having difficulty with auto focus. Sometimes it would focus and take a photo and sometimes it would not. Now it will not auto focus and take a photo. On manual focus I am unable to take a clear pic. All my photos on manual focus are slightly blurry. I went through the steps to put my camera back to default settings, but it did not correct the problem. Suggestions? Thanks.

Seems possible that the servo control /main processor control is faulty and will need help from Nikon service , It will be better to get a evaluation for the fault and so we can have a consenses on the fault.
get estimate and decide.

Rhilva has described my exact problem - which is really irritating when traveling overseas in beautiful locales, taking lanscape pics. It wasn't obvious that the manual focus wasn't working until downloading the pics. The manual focus is not split image, so it's difficult to judge, but when you put it on infinity, and they are a far distance, they should be focused. Reading another blog, I did clean the contacts and it's more responsive, but not 100%. I had tried leaving it on for extended periods, as that seemed to help, but it was truly hit or miss with focus - and therefore photo taking.
Has there been any further information or others who have this issue?

I cannot see what I taking in the screen

This camera doesn't have live view. It only shows the image after it has been taken. However, if it isn't showing the picture then, you have a problem. Try resetting the camera's menu back to factory defaults and check again. Otherwise the GOTO board on the back may be defective. Replacing this requires software and it would have to go to Nikon.

Why the screen on my Nikon Dx40 doesnt go on- so you cant see wha yo are pictring - so I should see only through the little lense.

The D40x works as SLRs have worked for half a century. You have to compose the picture through the viewfinder. The LCD screen is for menus, settings, and reviewing pictures after they've been taken. The LiveView capability allowing you to compose on the screen is a relatively new development, which Nikon introduced into their cameras with the D3 and D300, introduced years after the D40x.

Sorry if that wasn't the answer you wanted to see, but that's the way the D40x works.

My display screen is not showing the image of the picture. I have to look through the viewfinder. Only showing settings

That's the way the D40x works. Nikon introduced the LiveView feature with the D3 and D300, introduced more than a year after the D40x. The D40x works the way SLRs have worked for half a century, giving you the viewfinder for framing and composing.

Cannot take pictures thru lcd screen on d40x DSLR

The D40x is not capable of Liveview - i.e. looking at the LCD to take a picture. You are mistaken.
If you want Liveview, you need to buy the D3 or D300 cameras. The D40x is an entry-level camera.

D4ox lcd not showing 'live view'

Are you certain you used to have Live View on the D40x? Then something was wrong, as Nikon never put it in.

The D40x does not have Live View.

Information displayed over picture on screen

If you press the magnifying glass button when in playback mode, the data dissappears. I don't know if that fully answers your question, though.

conorp, not on a D40. This camera does not have the "Live View" capability.
