Low refrigerant will cause the compressor to run hot and shut down. Check the diagnostics codes. Mine was 2 3 5 by the diagnostic LEDs inside the outside unit

If the compressor starts and runs check the run capacitor for visual signs such as bulging of the casing or oil leakage which would indicate a bad run capacitor. A bad run capacitor will cause the compressor current draw to be above normal resulting in the overload protector tripping. If the compressor Hums then clicks the compressor is bad.
