Linux is much more HW friendly than MS Windows. There are no requirements generally. You may need the following:-
5 to 6 GB of **** space. 1 Gb of RAM should be more than enough.
May I suggest some options to you?
1. Go to www.custom.nimblex.com. Here you can customize your linux version. Ask for whatever you want from the list and you can download a .iso file which can be burnt to a bootable CD. This live CD can be inserted into any computer and boot from it in linux of your choice.
2. Go to www.knoppix.com and download the latest version of linux as a .iso file and then burn to a CD to make a live knoppix CD.
Both these options are cheap and very versatile. You can use them to boot any computer.

Requirements for linux

If your computer shows 0.99GB Ram which means you have 1GB RAM so there will no issue if you install Linux in your PC.
Now Let me Explain Why it is Showing 0.99GB even though your RAM is 1GB, well .1 GB are used for your startup program like Desktop and some other application so there is no need to worry about it. when you install linux it'll take full amount of RAM, 0.1 GB don't make any difference.

Hi. I bought a notebook where windows 7 has been installed. I want to install Linux Mint, but it does not work. I was able to shrink the drives with Windows Disk management, but when I insert a Linux...

You will need to hit the key function required to choose your boot media. Example, F2, F12. Choose the DVD drive. The Linux OS should format the drive area for the installation and install a boot manager that will allow you to choose which operating system that you want each time you turn it on.

I cant install linux on my [ IntelDG31PR motherboard ] PC.What I must to do?

Intel DG31PR is a pretty standard Intel motherboard: you can ALWAYS install a version/distribution of Linux on it as Linux has a lesser resources requirement than even Windows XP.

For assistance, refer to:
http://www.linux.org/docs/beginner/distributions.html

Specific free Linux distrution to try:

Hope it helps!

It is a pretty simple process

Create 3 partitions on the HDD (Vista requires 20 GB minimum)

Install XP on 1st, Vista on 2nd, Linux on 3rd

You'll choose the partition to install on during the install process of each OS, you can create the partitions during the XP install

Linux installation

When you install Linux it will offer to create the required partitions during the install. You just have to select a size (I use 10 Gb for my installs). Select "at end of free space". It will also load the Boot Loader so that you can dual boot either system.

Drivers required

SCSI Drivers are only an optional part.
This is not a problem with your driver floppies.

The problem is with the linux being preinstalled on the HD.

Linux uses many types of file-systems. Even if it was NTFS or FAT, it is most probable that windows xp cd won't be able to recognize it; because, it may use unsupported method of formatting.

What you have to do is;
1. Format the two HDs by either
  • Moving it to another windows or linux computer and fully formatting the Hard Disks using fat32 or NTFS (supported by windows). If it is a windows PC using for formatting, no problems. If it is a linux system, delete all partitions, and format the drive in FAT32 or NTFS and here, ONLY CREATE ONE FULL PARTITION COVERING ENTIRE SIZE OF DISK.
  • By a linux installation CD and here too, format the drive in FAT32 or NTFS and here, ONLY CREATE ONE FULL PARTITION COVERING ENTIRE SIZE OF DISK.
2. Install the windows xp in it, using the same booting from CD Porcess. Here, you may or may not choose to install the SCSI drivers ( the floppy you got by pressing F2 when it says to do so in the installation immediately). It is good not to install the SCSI drivers if it is not a necessity for you.

Now, you can create any number of partition, format, etc during win XP installation.
