I recently purchased a Samsung PS50P91FD 50 in plasma and when turned on after approx 15 minutes it makes a crackling noise from all around the front of the screen. Sounds like the front plastic cover? It goes away after approx 2 -3 hours of being on.
I think it may be heat related? Is there a way to fox this? A Samsung tv technician came around and said it was the first time he encountered it and that there was nothing he could do. He opened the unit and tightened all screws but the problem still persists. This is the second tv as the retailer i bought it from exchanged the first one as it had the same problem.

Hi,do you hear any strange noises? If you hear clicking or like wanting to turn on it could be the board that powers the lamp it's called the ballast. Here's the instructions to replace it :http://www.fixyourdlp.com/guides/samsung/bp47-00033a.php That crackling sound could be of the color wheel:The color wheel is a rotating disc that has a gamma of colors it spins at high rpms. The light of the lamp goes through it to create the colors on your tv.When it starts to go bad you will get color distortion ,black and white picture and sometimes you will hear humming noises. But if you don't hear any strange noises,tv is around 6000 hrs,2-4 yrs it could be time to replace the lamp. The lamp you need is BP9601073A you can find original here:http://www.discount-merchant.com/Samsung-BP96-01073A-lamp-p/samsung-bp96-01073a-lamp-oem.htm?Click=48173 .Have a blessed one!
Well, you definetly right...... The driver of the ballast is busted, now the ballast is to weak to maintain on that lamp. I will recommend to stop trying to turn ON tv since this could damage the bulb by blowing it from inside. I will recommend to change ballast and the old lamp should work for a little while (since I am quite sure that this bad ballast is consumming faster that lamp). Or change lamp and ballast as well that shouldnt cost you more than 200 in booth things.
you can have the ballast from samsungpartsdotcom or i also had purchase some from discount-merchantdotcom (excellent service)
If this set is still within the warranty period, return it for warranty service. Since this is an intermittant problem, I would request an exchange. If they won't exchange the set (even after going up the chain of management), provide specifics about the problem. State up front that this is an intermittant problem. Once reported, the warranty kicks in even if the problem doesn't become hard and fast until after the warranty has expired since the initial report occurred before the warranty expiration. This is not a problem caused by external devices.
