Your computer must have a floppy disk drive in order to read data. You have to buy one or borrow computer (from your friend maybe).

Non system disk or disk error appears when power up

make sure you dont have any cd's or floppy disc inside the drives during powerup. Most the time this happens is when the Boot setup has one of the CD/Floppy drives before the Hard-drive in the boot up list. You can change his by going into Bios.

Where is the insert for the floppy disc

The floppy disk may or may not be installed in section 5. They started eliminating floppy drives some years ago, when USB flash started to become popular.

FlexBay drive panel
Can contain an optional floppy drive or optional Media Card Reader. For information on using the Media Card Reader, see Using a Media Card Reader (Optional).

If your question was more basic than this, and you have a floppy drive, then you just insert the floppy into the slot. It doesn't open. Look for the arrow on the floppy disk, if it doesn't go in one way, turn it over.

Computer shows invalid system disc, wont let me do anything else

This might be simple.
Assuming your son didn't make any internal changes to your computer. The problem may be that he changed your boot sequence to boot to floppy or CD instead of the Hard Drive.
Do the following:

As your computer is starting you will briefly have the option to hit F8 (I think F8 Might be another) for "start up menu or options".
This will take you to a screen of text where following the on screen text areas and moving the curser with the keyboard arrows and enter or escape check your boot sequence (the order of where your computer is to look for start up information)

It should read as follows:
#1 HDD1 (this text may vary)
#2 CDROM drive
#3 FLOPPY (if you have one) or other removable drive

If your son changed this and forgot to it back your computer may be trying to get start up information from a CD or Floppy instead of your hard drive.

Once you've changed this (assuming you needed to change it) following the instructions use the key to "save changes and exit"
Your computer should now boot up correctly.

Let me know if this helps

Reinstalling windows 98 o toshiba 420cdt laptop

You have two choices:
  • Convert your windows 98 cd into many boot floppies. Then install from floppy. There is a utility on the CD (although I can't remember its name. I think it's something like makedisk.exe) that when ran will prompt you for many floppies.
  • You can remove the hard drive drive from the laptop, and insert it into another desktop computer. You'll need a small adapter to do this, like the one found here:
  1. http://www.pccables.com/cgi-bin/orders6.cgi?action=Showitem&partno=00504&rsite=00504
  2. Once you have inserted the drive into another machine, you can now copy the files from the windows 98 cd to the hard drive.
  3. Now re-insert the drive back into the laptop, and boot from the floppy again. Once inside DOS, you can change directory to your windows98 cd files on the hard drive, and simply run setup.exe.
The second method takes a little longer, but will give you many other benefits, including never having to insert the cd to install a windows component again. Let me know how it goes.
