Question about Rheem Water Heaters

2 Answers

Shut off electric current from the breaker switch to Rheem electric water heater for the summer on May 2, 2010 since no hot water needed for the summer. In an attempt to turn on the breaker switch to the electric heater, the breaker switch does not stay on. Not sure if there is a problem with the breaker switch or electric water heater. Any ideas? Never had problems with the electric water heater before. Purchased house in November 2002 with the new electric water heater.

How old is the heater? is there a chance the water was ever drained with the power still on? either way you will need to check the elements for continuity with an ohm meter, chances are one of them has failed. turn off the power and remove the top and bottom cover on the face to access the elements. remove the conductors from the element screws and measure the resistance across the element, should be about 18 - 19.2 ohms for a 3000 watt 240 volt element. also check from each screw to the metal jacket of the water tank, you should read infinity.

Rheem 50 gallon Electric Water Heater 81V52D C repair ideas needed

It could be element shorted to ground through steel tank, so don't touch tank when breaker is ON.
Or you have undersized 12 gauge wire and 20 amp breaker and the heat has loosened breaker on the busbar. Breaker trips when heat exceeds breaker limit. Jiggle breaker and listen for crackling sound.

To restore hot water now:
Turn off circuit breaker, and open top cover then Push in reset button on top of heater to restore functionality. Put back insulation and factory cover.
To fix water heater: test and replace bad element.

I need to know where the reset buttons are located on the 30gal model 71-305 Rheem hot water heater. Help I'm not getting hot water so I'm trying to start with what may be a simple solution.

Shut off all power to water heater at breaker panel, remove side cover where thermostat is located. Test that there is no voltage at connections, with meter, to be 100% sure you shut off correct breaker. Thermostat should have a red button in middle to depress to reset if it's tripped.

Be sure to have your circuit breaker off before you remove the cover.
220V and water together is not a good mix.

Our electric water heater doesn't work.

make sure it is wired correctly, check circuit breaker, check breaker built on to element. If all fails, and it is determined your not getting power to it, you may need a electrician. Be careful. good luck.

No hot water, Rheem Model RR612T, Electric Hot Water Heater, 60 g

If you don't have current, 0v from terminal to terminal, then you don't have voltage to the elements. Replace the thermostat but check that you have 220v to the thermostat. It is possible that your breakers to the unit are either bad or tripped.

No hot water.

Please get an expert in - this is either the breaker is faulty or you have an electric fault int he boiler. You can try and replace the breaker - but match the current rating. But this could be dangerous if you keep trying to reset.
