Question about Canon Office Equipment & Supplies

3 Answers

When printing with my Canon image Class MF 4350d and using double sided setting there is a half inch wide band of distorted printing for about 1.5 inches starting at the very top of the page. The rest of the page is OK but that half inch band continues for the full second page. It is positioned about 3 inches from the left hand side and matches the short band on page 1. If I do not print double sided the problem does not occur. Thanks.

The previous expert suggested reinstalling the driver, which I have done.
Also suggested the possibility of an "ink dump" which I don't think applies to a laser printer.
    I'd like another opinion.
Only additional info. to add from my original post is to say that after the consistent problem as mentioned the printer continues to work fine until the next time I print.

  • dbeckman142 Sep 28, 2010

Yes that makes sense. It was factory built in.

    Thanks.

  • dbeckman142 Sep 28, 2010

Yes it worked fine, but then started this. The pattern is always identical -- a half inch vertical strip of garbage text starting with the very top of the sheet and going for about 2 inches then on over - side a strip the entire sheet, top to bottom. Then starting on p. 3 and forward all OK.

I could fax a copy, or scan one in if helpful?

    Thanks.

I have scanned it how shall I send it to you? An email address? thanks.

  • dbeckman142 Sep 29, 2010

OK Thanks I have used your email address.

  • dbeckman142 Sep 29, 2010

Yes it is always in the same location. Interesting that after page 2 it works fine.

I'll look at my bills, but I think it is about 2 years old.

Does fixing it mean I might as well buy a new one -- or just not doing duplex? Or is this a procedure I might try to fix?

    Thanks for your help.

    OK Tim,
Thanks for your help on this. Much appreciated.

  • dbeckman142 Sep 29, 2010

The help I got was careful and thorough, and I appreciated the assistance I got.

  • dbeckman142 Sep 30, 2010

It looks as though a scotch tape had been on a page, then ripped off with a bit of residual distorted text left on that strip. It is a vertical strip about 4 inches from the left side and continues to the bottom. Either side of the strip is clear.

    Thanks

Strange, it sounds like the duplex portion of the printer is causing the issue. Did you add this duplexer after you purchased it, or was it part of the original printer? I think the d in 4350d indicates that it is duplex from the factory, but please confirm.

Thanks
Tim

Hmm strange indeed, and you have successfully printed double sided pages in the past I assume? It just started doing this one day? I am researching this now, but let me know.

    Thanks

You can but I don't think it will tell us much in particular. It sounds like the duplexer is having physical failure... But go ahead and scan one in and attach it so I can see what it is.

    thanks

Test test, it shows you already rated my answer, but verifying, the system is working strange lately.

Ok thats what I thought, it reset, anyway strange.

I see your scan here and wow that is much worse than I thought. In my mind it was just a little smudge, nothing as bad as this! That duplexer is definitely shot in my opinion... I am assuming this smudge / line is in the exact same physical location every time you print double sided correct? If it moves around it could be something else, but I am thinking it's in the same spot every time.

Yikes... how old did you say this unit was? Any chance you bought it on a major credit card (not debit card...)? I ask because many of the credit card companies put automatic extended warranties on electronics such as this and it may be covered by that. American Express for example does 5 years on all electronics bought on the card, and would refund you your money for instance.

But it definitely is hardware failure here, I believe that duplexer can be replaced though.....

I would not try to fix it yourself that's for sure, and to have it fixed is cost prohibitive for sure... especially since you can get a brand new one for $149 shipped, no tax here:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001EWD...

You may want to just do that, and use the new one for duplex only, and the old one for simplex / regular printing. Or you could sell your old one on ebay for easily $70 + and just list it as printing fine, aside from duplex printing which has a "bar" on the page. Someone will definitely buy it, it's still a great printer.

That's what I'd personally do, and I bet you probably have more toners for it so you probably want to stick with the same printer.

    Thanks
    Tim

Usually, when problems happen on double-sided copies but not on single-sided ones, it's either caused by the transfer unit or by the pressure roller (in the fusing unit).

What exactly do you mean by distorted? Like wavy or hazy?

HI there,

1. Keep in mind there are always only 2 major problem areas possible; hardware or software or both.
2. Canon uses locally owned and operated Printer/Computer service centers (the "Service Center" may look like a postage stamp but the envelope may hold an old hand who's a genius at Canon probs much like the one I use)
3. If the software is the problem, a conplete unistall and re-install will solve it.
4. If the hardware is the problem and you're not a Certified Canon printer tech who guarantees his work, then take it in and get it fixed, or, having made sure there will be a flat rate encapsulated in a 90 day Guarantee, and that the flat rate is less than buying a new printer, fix it.
5. Canons have a nasty little side issue that's never mentioned at point of sale. They have an "ink dump" because they spew out alot of extra juice to make things pretty. Changing out that ink dump costs about $120 unless you track down how to do it yourself, messy and victorious, or messy and completely demoralized in the midst of a technological epic fail.

6. Even if I'm wrong, I deserve 4 thumbs up for exquisite writing.

That is best bet since it appears that your print head is fubar and Canon charges a fortune for them. Cheaper to get a new printer with warranty.
