Computer slow or hangs up, 1 gig of memory in use

The computer runs very slowly or not at all. task mamanger shows 1 gigabyte of memory in use (50%) but doesnt list any process that is using anywhere near that. tried removing norton security in case that is somehow running in the background, but that didnt help. (will reinstall if and when the computer speeds up enough for me to do that).

Before installing norton just give a try to avast 4.8 you can down load it free from avast.com, your pc is infected by viruse, just do a scan by disabling the system restore, post back your findings

My Laptop is running very slow, what can i do?

Your machine is running slowly because you have too many items running in the background. And if you also have some sort of virus protection running, forget it. Using msconfig command in your run window, remove all of the arrows that are checked in your startup window. Also, turn off your virus protection, reboot, and you will be amazed at the difference.

Adding memory does not speed up a computer - it just helps to minimize the speed slowdown that occurs when you run a program(s). Just run your machine lean and mean and you will be a happy camper.

Memory is used up by excel

I don't think you can. It's a real resource hog especially if youre using 2010/13. See below.

Excel 2003 is officially limited to 1 Gigabyte (GB) of memory.
This limit appears to be a limit on the working set memory used by the Excel process, which is the memory reported by Windows Task Manager.
Although Excel 2003 has a substantially increased memory capacity, many of the individual specific memory limits listed below have not changed in Excel 2003.

Excel 2007 is limited to 2 Gigabytes of memory for the Excel process under Windows XP/Vista (Windows memory limit).
This 2 Gigabyte limit is a limit on the Virtual Memory address space. Virtual memory used by a process is larger than the working set memory reported by Windows Task Manager, so the amount of useable memory under Excel 2007 is considerably less than twice that of Excel 2003.
Because Excel 2007 (Excel12) also requires more memory to store the indexes to the increased number of rows and columns you may not be able to load larger workbooks under Excel 2007 than was possible under Excel 2003. Memory Fragmentation may also mean that it is difficult to make use of all of the available 2 GB of virtual memory.

Many of the individual memory limits listed below have been removed in Excel 2007.

Excel 2010 is available in 2 versions: 32-bit (2 Gigabytes of virtual memory) and 64-bit (8-Terabytes (which is 8000 Gigabytes of virtual memory)).
The 32-bit version has the same memory limits as Excel 2007, but the 64-bit version, when used with a 64-bit Windows operating system, will have extremely large memory limits.
Note that the different versions of Windows Vista 64-bit and Windows 7 64-bit support differing amounts of RAM.

Computor is slow

Many of these only came with 4 gigabytes of RAM memory. You need more with Windows 8 and 8.1. You can get another 4 gig of DDR3 Memory and put it in the open memory socket next to the 4 gig you have.

I have a Acer AX1200-U1510A AM2+ Motherboard and i would like to upgrade the processor, ihave 4 gigs of mem and a 1 gig Gigabyte Gt 610 graphics card. I only have a 240 watt power supply what processo

Should work with a processor of the same socket type. I'd seriously upgrade the psu myself. Personally I'd upgrade the motherboard and processor to a quad core, and get the fastest ram, look at ebuyer.com, you can buy a bundle upgrade package for less than you may think. :)

I installed two new 1 gigabyte memory sticks into a Dell Inspiron 6000, which previously only had 2 256 megabyte memory sticks installed. When I first installed the 2 gigs of new memory, the laptop turned...

Once you installed the memory, did you enter into the System BIOS Setup screen? Do this and verify that the system recognizes the newly installed 2GB RAM. This should let the system access the new memory once you boot.

Slow Computer

Could be lots of reasons. First thing you're gonna want to do is backup your important files.

I'd say it's time for a format / re-install.

You could try figuring out the exact problem(s) but it's much smarter to do what I suggested.

Trust me.

COMP SLOW ALL THE SUDDEN!

I am no expert at vista yet but I can tell you that 2 gigs of RAM is not enough. You can disale some features in Vista, but it is a memory hog and you should probably be running about 4 gigs Ram.
