There are steps to 'change' the visual effects of the "Display." 1. Right click on "Desktop", click Personalize, click, Display Settings. 2. Identify, Monitor used? 3. Down (arrow) select Monitors' graphics. 4. Adjust, (low>high) resolution. 5. Select, Colors (16 bit>32bit), etc. 6. Click, Advanced Settings, click Properties ("check device status"). 7. Update Drivers (only if, necessary?) 8. Click on "List All Modes" select valid (modes) for the monitor. Note: Always click on the 'Apply', and 'OK' buttons after application changes for the process to take effect. 9. Restart "Computer". *Next go, to: Screen Saver, in the Screen Saver Settings change 'Power' settings. *Next go, to: Start Menu, click on Product Name: (Toshiba), click 'Utilities' click, Toshiba Assist, click 'Optimize' click,"Display"; change power on display. *Next go, to Control Panel, in Mobile PC, click; "Adjust commonly used mobility settings" (changes the following); Display brightness, and Connect Display. “I hope this Fix it!”

To determine if the video card or the LCD is faulty, connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight. It could be a faulty inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out; usually the CCFL lamp fails before the inverter.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

Paul, Georgiana and You, 1. do you have an antivirus installed on your laptop? if not, then install one rightaway. 2. also from start->control panel->system->hardware->display adapters and monitor. uninstall the display adapters and reinstall them. similarly uninstall and reinstall the monitor drivers. 3. go to http://www.drivershq.com/Drivers/Toshiba/Satellite/A45-S130/4183/9941/10606/Drivers.aspx you will find here a driver detective that can detect your driver problems. try with that. 4. on the site above you will find drivers, for you to download and install on your laptop. if you still have problems, then you have

Toshiba M45-S331, Black screen

I just went through all this myself. First I had the inverter replaced ($200) and it worked great for a week, then the screen went out again. It turned out that the LCD needed replaced ($200 more, labor comped from the first no-fix). There's a problem with the Toshiba LCDs that makes them burn out sooner than other brands. Since the replaced screen, no problems (2 months). Sucks, I know.
