Question about GE Adora DSS25KSTSS Stainless Steel Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

Both sides warming up. Refrigerator freezes bottom half, drawers and door. Warms up to 50 plus degrees top half. Freezer warms up on top half as well. Melts all ice from ice maker. Cleaned Compressor by vacuuming adn blowing with compressor. Worked for a day, then doing it again. UGHH just threw away $200 of groceries yesterday and now am going to have to do it again. This thing sucks!!!

Purchased 7/06/06 from Home Depot with a Home Depot card. THis has been happening over the past 9 months. After I clean the compressor it works for a moth or so then again. This time not so lucky. I did buy the Service Contract from 8/1/07 to 8/1/09. So it sounds like I am screwed? Probably have to get a new compressor or electronincs? Yesterday I did find a weird thing when trying to fix. All teh paint on the ice maker is peeling off and had completely closed off the vents under the ice maker . Could I have a case there?

  • pat_b_cooper Sep 28, 2010

04107, and yea I did remove all pealing paint as well as removed back interior cover to see if coils were defrosting. Top ones were not. After Idid all this it started working and blowing cold air out those vents again. Now I hear nothing, even set on Turbo Cool. New Junk. Hard to believe the old dogs that used to go for ever with minimal service huh?

Thanks, good advice. I really thought I had it figured out but with all the new electronics I wanted to give this a try. I will move on to next step. P

How old is the fridge? It sounds like the compressor itself is going bad. If you think it may still be under warranty please contact the manufacturer to file an RMA. If you happened to purchase the fridge with a major credit card (not a debit card) there is a good chance it may still be under the free extended warranty most credit cards place on electronics. Please contact your credit card company to inquire if they do this, and they will be able to file the claim and get you a refund for the fridge.

So sorry that I don't have better news but it is definitely a compressor issue and will at least need service, but I recommend checking your options so you don't need to pay for it.

I would definitely try opening up / breaking through those covered vents, that definitely is not helping, but it shouldn't cause the problem as a whole. However it is possible I suppose. And yes unfortunately you may be out of luck on the warranty side then :(. Man oh man that is unfortunate. It sounds like you will need some service to it for sure, if you want I can find someone in your area that is reputable to come and check it out. What is your zip code (that is if you want me to check this)?

I know exactly what you mean, some fridges from the 50's are still humming away today. It seems like luck of the draw with these things. I have seen some fail within weeks of delivery, brand new top of the line fridges, others last 10 years easily... I am so sorry to hear about your experience though :(. I have some good repair places in your area, and will list them here in order of my recommendation. I am not sure if these first folks do repairs or not, but if they do they are definitely my highest recommendation, they are very good people and will treat you right. If for some reason you end up needing a new one, at least check them out, but hopefully they do repairs as well. If not check with the other 3, they are also good, but get estimates or something first before committing:

Top drawer of freezer seems to work but large bottom drawer not freezing even at -5degrees. Can this be fixed?

This problem seems to be two sided. A refrigerator defrost it is supposed to take the water from defrost down a pipe located behind the freezer rear wall to a pan below the refrigerator where there is a fan blowing warm air over the water to evaporate back into your home or business. If that drain is blocked your refrigerator will accumulate a large block of ice and frost behind the rear panel of freezer and temperatures will warm considerably in fresh food compartment and freezer. Here is one site I want you to read over=> Leaking Refrigerators Just What may Be Happening and here=> Leaking Refrigerators here is a link to a service manual=> LFX25960xx Service Manual Let me know if this service manual is close enough to your model number. At this point I am looking for air blockage behind the rear panel of freezer. If air is being blocked by ice and frost you can use a hair drier to help speed you up while melting ice. If drain is blocked use whatever you can to open the drain line mentions on the links I sent you to and let me know what is found, Thanks Sea Breeze

I have a side by side double door fridge. My freezer is cold and working fine but my fridge side is not getting cold.

check yor damper door, it's the little door at the top and or bottom of the fridge insid near the top and or at the bottom behind the crisper drawer when working right they open to let cold air in from the freezer and warm air out. top one cold in, bottom one warm air out.they work on a sensor/relay when the freezer fan goes on they open when cold air is needed.

The freezer side does not freeze on the top shelf. The refrigerator freezes everything in the bottom but reads 47 degrees and doesn't cool the top shelves. The fan under the fridge runs fine.

Behind the back wall of the freezer about halfway down, probably behind the light bulb (if there is one there) there is a fan. My guess is that the fan isn't working, or is slow. To test, open the freezer door, then hold the door switch closed and listen for the fan.

This fan should be blowing air up the back of the freezer, and send some of the cold air through a vent at the top of the freezer into the fridge. The air then descends through the fridge and reenters the freezer through a vent at the bottom. If the fan is broken, or if the upper vent is somehow blocked or broken, the cold air will enter (rather than exit) the fridge side at the bottom vent. Because cold air tends to descend and warm air rises, the cold air will freeze the stuff at the bottom of the fridge, and the thermostat (at the top of the fridge) will say it is warm.

it is almost certainly a defrost problem. when fault has occured, remove freezer bzck panel and see if there is ice build-up. if so this confirms a defrost problem - possibly that the element is open circuit
