That's a motherboard problem.

NO, not a motherboard problem. If you work on Macs then you know its the power/sound board that has failed or you need a new charger.

This computer sounds like it has died. You can try to see if Apple will fix it for you, but I doubt that they will. It may be time to buy a new computer.

My g4 is bouncing back and forth between the adaptor and the battery and is not charging

This is often due to a knackered battery. Lithium batteries have a life of about 2yrs.
Download Coconut Battery from here ( and this will tell you if it's fine or not.
If the battery is fine, do a firmware reset, then reset the PRAM & NVRAM.
If that doesn't do it, get apple to check out the motherboard.

There is no internal Battery. As you said its a capacitor to hold Pram settings while you change the battery.

Replace your battery (or borrow one) that should solve your problem

when it is off (sounds like all the time now!) remove battery and then try to start, this will reset the Pram, refit battery and start, if ok good if not try starting with the left side shift key depressed, this should cause it to start in safe mode, it disables a lot of start up options and does some housework.

Apple laptops are designed to run properly from AC with no battery installed at all. Physically remove the battery, plug in the AC adapter, and it should run fine.
If it does not, reset the power management unit as described here:
If this doesn't work, you have a hardware issue that a repair tech would have to address.

Battery for iBook 14inch not recognized by iBook

you could try resetting your pram..?

Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
  3. Turn on the computer.
  4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
  5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
  6. Release the keys.
Your computer's PRAM and the NVRAM are reset to the default values. The clock settings may be reset to a default date on some models.
Resetting PMU on PowerBook or iBook computers In some troubleshooting situations, if resetting PRAM does not resolve an issue, resetting the PMU may be the next appropriate step. For information on when this is appropriate and for instructions on how to reset the PMU in your PowerBook computer, see Resetting PowerBook and iBook Power Management Unit (PMU).

PowerBook Aluminum 17" not restarting after SLEEP MODE.

It does, but its not a fault, its a component. You may need to zap your pram or reset the pmu. when the power cable is plugged in, does the battery light flash on the bottom fo the machine confirming its charging? When you press power, does the caps lock key light up after being pressed? if your battery ( extenal ) is faulty, your machine should still power off the auxilary cable. the power cable bypasses the battery when plugged in. Do you keep youpower cable plugged in for extended times regularly, that kills batteries. make sure youre cycling properly.
