Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

I have an older Teledyne Laars EPS Gold Series One pool heater. About a year ago, I had a new Jandy igniter installed. Now, the pilot light goes on and simply burns -- it does not ignite the full burners and I smell gas (not a good sign). Pool does not heat. I have 10PSI of water pressure from my filter going into the heating pipes so I think I am good from that standpoint. Any help would be appreciated.

You need to see what what pressure is required to turn the heater on. If you don't have enough flow or pressue, the heater will not ignite. Was it working before?

Yes, it was working before. The pressure is lower than historical pressure amounts but still at 10 psi which should be enough.

You need to remember, while 10 PSI was enough a while ago, as your heater gets older, diaphragms and spring plates begin to lose there effectiveness because of the conditions they are under. While 10 PSI is not a lot of pressure, they are working under temps of well over 120 to 140 degrees because they are reading what is coming directly from the heater. Your pool heater is sized to heat your pool within a certain time to a certain temperature by the codes in your jurisdiction. So, your temp safety could see temperatures of 100 to 1040 degrees depending on what your requirements are for your region. Change the temp safety switches and I think you'll be golden. It's just a matter of replacing stuff when it gets older and it comes with the normal life cycle of pool and spa equipment.

I HAve old Teledyne Laars pool heater. When I try to light the pilot it a larger flame creeps out from the pilot. IS this a pilot generator issue. Also any links to old terradyne manuals ?

The aluminium has gotten old in the pilot tube and is starting to leak. You can just replace the tube but when you start disturbing the pilot it can lead to other problems. I would sugest getting a whole new pilot assembly and replaceing the whole thing. If it that old be sure to ask for propane or natural gas when you order the part.
I don't know about old books online but you can write to Laars and ask them. They are under Jandy-Laars now.
