I see that your Laptop was not pre-installed with XP, it was with Vista. Installing XP on it, will be a downgrade which is not recommended by them (HP). In HP Laptops, there is always trouble making the device and drivers work with retail version OS.
Anyways, I got the audio driver for XP, you can give it a try....
The Audio is a High definition Audio and we can not install the Audio driver ditectly without installing the UAA (Universal Audio Architecture) driver in Windows XP. So, first install UAA driver (restart) then install Audio driver (restart).
NVidia Chipset,(install and reboot before other drivers), here
NVIDIA GeForce 8200 Nvidia ForceWare X 179.28 for Windows XP/2K 32bit, here
3-step process to install: 1. Download driver, double click and select extract, 2. Download modded INF and replace original INF in extracted folder, 3. Install & reboot.
or you may try other versions, joint their forum for further details
Note: If you found errors (hopefully it has been fixed) when installing Nvidia 8200M G video driver, you need to force install the driver. Pieter's INF forgot to put hardware ID for 8200M G, see this post.
MS-UAA (required with a reboot before Audio, Modem and nForce HDMI Audio drivers), here

if it errors use Device Manager. From Device Manager, right click "Audio Device on HD",choose Update driver, No to connect, Install from a list or specific location,
Select Don't Search, I will choose the driver to install, For the Hardware Type select 'Show All Devices' Remove the check from "Show Compatible Hardware" and click on "Have Disk". Next...browse to the unzipped folder and choose the "WiSVHe5.inf". Ignore XP when it complains. Reboot.

This has all of the drivers for your model laptop. Download and install any missing drivers.
If you are installing Windows Vista or 7 - there aren't any "official" drivers for those operating systems and this laptop. Your best bet its to try the Windows XP Professional drivers first. If this fails you can try the Windows 2000 drivers but probably won't work.
If the above does not work, there is always the USB Audio Adapter option - purchase a USB audio device and install the drivers for it. This would resolve driver and hardware issues. Amazon lists one for a $1.
hi, As denoted by your problem description, it seems you are talking about audio software. If this is the case, you can try it re-installing the audio drivers provided by HP website or if you have drivers Disk with you.
Please let me know if you are not talking about software and are referring to Audio device drivers.
