My HP Pavilion DV6929WM is having a few problems.. For some reason the screen will randomly go to 800 x 640 resolution, saying that there is another display. There is no other display besides the laptop...

sure, (reload a fresh new video driver)
what game, name it ?
are you using an external screen, all the time or part time?
does device manager show all drivers for GPU and Screen ok>?
the
DV6929WM has hot key for external screen, mine has on/off/auto, turn it off.
this pc is only supported at VISTA. says HP.com
so you changed OS right?
that means only non HP drivers now work.
so that takes hard work.

here is what it came with
https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-pavilion-dv6900-entertainment-notebook-pc-series/3725196/model/3757121

when you upgrade with no HP support, problems will be plenty
we have to fix them 1 by 1, the hard way,
getting each driver 1 by 1, see. ?
go to nivida.com and get i.
its a Geforce, (i have one of their fastest here now,)

My laptop keeps shutting off it is a hp pavillion dv6000

1- Scanning computer to eliminate malwares, spywares and the viruses from your laptop.
2- Repairing and cleaning Windows registry.
These two tips are found to be very helpful to fix the laptop shutdown problem. Almost all the computer users surf internet which could result in viruses attacking your system. Some of these infections are really pesky and cause the machines to shutdown randomly.
The registry errors, however, are the internal errors and can become a cause of system crashes and freezes. The registry keys shall be in good health to keep a system perfect.
When I noticed my laptop keeps shutting down everytime, I tested the Intel Software Partner, RegInOut to fix the random shutdown problem with my laptop.

Having problems with HP Pavilion dv9000 overheating and shutting down. I've downloaded a new bios as HP support suggested (but I think it was actually an older version of the bios that was on my laptop),...

The overheating can also be cause by the battery. Please check the following article link as it lists models affected. There's also a link in the article, if you need to contact HP's battery replacement program.
