It's probably the fan to the heatsink. Run part number 5188-7284 through Google. You can find fans for $50 - $100. HP gives out the wrong part number as they don't consider the one attached to the heat sink to be a fan. If you ask how many fans it has, they will state "only one." This is not true.

Go to eBay. In the search box, type in "TouchSmart IQ770 CPU Fan repair guide." Get the guide, do what it says. You'll probably end up spending around $30 or $40 and a few hours of time, but it works

It's an I ('eye') Q 770.

With tact and diplomacy:

1) Do you know how to open this puppy up? How to remove the Access Covers?

2) Do you know about Anti-Static Precautions?

3) Do you have experience with working on laptops, or at least desktop computers?

Make a mistake here, and you'll have an expensive doorstop.

1A) How to Remove the Access Covers,

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01060928&tmp_track_link=ot_recdoc/c00858789/en_us/c01060928/loc:1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=3351220

More information can be obtained in the download (Free) manual - Parts Replacement Instructions.
But only a small modicum of info.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=3351220&

Left-click on HP TouchSmart Desktop PCs - Parts Replacement Instructions.

{This is a PDF file. The computer you are on now has Adobe Reader on it, which uses PDF files. After you click on the above named link, you may see a blank page for a few seconds. The file is downloading in the background, please be patient }

{ Motherboard Specifications:
Not current to the stated problem, but could be a world of information for you in the future.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00858789&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3351220&lang=en#N1013 }

2A) Anti-Static Precautions:

Your body carries Static electricity.
Static will fry out (Short Circuit) the hardware components inside a computer.

Computer unplugged from power before you work on it. Also hold the Power On button in, and hold it in for a count of Five seconds.
Let go of the Power On button. Do this procedure 2 more times.

Haven't worked on the TouchSmart series of HP computers. Cannot tell you if the frame inside is made of Steel.
Experience in the computer repair business, and logic, dictates it is not.
I suspect the framework is Aluminum, as is used in laptops.

With a desktop computer you would make sure it is unplugged from power, then touch the metal frame of the open computer case, to relieve your body of Static. (Should you leave your computer in the middle of repair, touch the metal frame again upon your return)

With a laptop you should buy, and wear an ESD wrist strap. (Electro Static Discharge)
Connect the alligator clip to a good ground source. ( I use the metal frame of an empty desktop computer case)
An ESD wrist strap is also the best method for working on a desktop computer.

Therefore I recommend you buy, and wear an ESD wrist strap, when working on the IQ770. (Unplugged from power)
The average cost of an ESD wrist strap is around $6.

3A) With patience, and determination, you will replace the fan, and gain experience.
(Also as you have read there aren't that many techs, except at HP, that work on these babies. You may find your experience to benefit you, and others when someone has a problem with HP TouchSmart computers. JMHO)

I just did a search. Are you sitting DOWN?
$285.00 US dollars! REFURBISHED!

http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/HP,TouchSmart,IQ700,Computer,Fans.aspx

I suggest you see if you can carefully open the fan shroud, (The casing around the fan), and find a fan/motor replacement.

Look at the markings on the label of the fan.
Post what you see.
The fan should run on 5 Volts DC, (5VDC), or 12 Volts DC, (12VDC)

Tell me how many wires, and the color code of the wires.
(Color of the insulation on the wires)

What RPM is listed? (Revolutions Per Minute)
Examples: 1000RPM. 1200RPM. 1500RPM
It may just list the number, and not have the designation RPM after it.
(The above numbers are just off the top of my head. the RPM's could be Much higher, or lower)

Measure across the fan blades, give me the Diameter. (Inches or Millimeters, or Centimeters)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diameter

Measure the Width, or thickness of the fan blades.

I have an touch smart iq770 and as soon as i turn it on i get a message saying that the fan has topped working and that the computer will turn off t prevent major problems

Remove the cover from the bottom section and locate the cpu cooling fan and see if it spins on power-up. Try cleaning it if it is very dirty. If it still does not work you will need to find a replacement.

I have an HP touchsmart IQ790uk, error message: cpu fan failed

The fan is attached to the heat-sink and can be removed/unscrewed off the heatsink. Take the fan to the computer or elecronics hobby shop for a replacement fan.
The are after-market CPU heat-sink fan assemblies available (these usually provide better cooling than the original units), just remove the existing assembly and take it to your friendly computer shop for a suitable replacement.

Your system's fan has failed. If it is under warranty, you need to have HP made aware of this failure.

Hp Mecia Center m7060n fan failed, new fan not detected

the fan must be the correct fan
i guess you meant the CPU fan, ? desktops can have 2 or 3 fans.
the fan has 3 wires, in many cases, the 3rd wire is a RPM tachometer that if not correct the PC can not read RPM
if RPM reads 0 the PC will be very upset. and do that.
my guess you bought the wrong fan, and is super easy to do
giving the many fans
on some PCs the BIOS monitors the fan RPM and heat sink temperatures, or both, and tells yous fan bad for either failing

on my PC here, now, I can go in to bios and see both live sensors
RPM and Temperature. this allows for easier diagnosis
i dont think your PC has that page in BIOS to do monitors for trouble shooting, in fact mine has 3 fans all 3 are monitored, now.
high end PC .

this older desktop , only the m7200 pages are there. at hp.
so cant look at the fan nor BIOS.

i use a windows program that lets me watch the fan speeds
and all CPU and GPU core temperatures. (ask) its free.
the troubleshooting guide at HP stops short at this problem
says get it fixed. so you want to fix it your self sure.
so talk to one of the top, CPU/HEATSINK/FAN makers
and buy this from them.
if the fan spins fast and RPM is 0 wrong fant
if the fan spins fast and RPM is ok, then the BIOS dont like the CPU temperature... this has 3 causes.
fan dead. or slow. or wrong fan installed
heat sink fins packed in lint as all do ever year.
heat sink thermal bond compound failure, common.

You have voice message telling you CPU test failed , but does it BEEP at all ? if you have a Beep code then replace the CPU fan ( when CPU gets too hot it will either shut down or the PC will not boot up at all )

Cpu fan noisy/chip fan fail error messages

pils,

Yes. This sounds like a fan issue. The noise often comes from bearings failing within the fan. Also, a failing bearing can make things harder on the motor as it brings the fan up to speed. This is likely the reason that you see increased warnings during the fan speed check while booting because it comes to speed more slowly as bearing wear increases.

I give this a 90% chance that your CPU fan is causing the issue. Since a decent CPU fan will cost you ~$20 online, it's not much out of your pocket if you happen to uncover another culprit.

I'll keep an eye on this post. Let me know how things go.

Cpu fan noisy /chip fan fail

You must buy a new CPU Fan. You can get them HERE or a zillion other places on the Internet. You need a Socket 939 type fan that will handle your cpu speed. If you need help installing it, it may be in the manual. You can read the manual by clicking on the picture of your MB at the top of this post and then scrolling down.

Hope that fixed ya...
