Question about SimpleTech 1TB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive - Gray Gun Metal

1 Answer

When I check the volume on the drive it shows 950 G used. When I all the highlighted folder using "Properties", the total is 650 G. So, I'm missing 350 G. Where do you think it may have vanished. One day to the next, 350 G has disappeared? First I though it just hopped out for beer and pizza, but it hasn't come back yet. And I'm not even sure if formatting would solve the problem. Thanks a lot for kind help. Cheers Tom

What format is the drive? FAT32 / NTFS / EXT3?

Have you tried using the 'Linux gparted' to see what part of the disk still needes to be formatted?

Ubuntu can be downloaded in an .iso file then put onto a cd for booting without installing.

This .iso can be got from:

The 32bit version can be used on most pc's. I am using cdBurnXP to burn my disks an find it very useful.

How do I get a file back that was hide?

Main Menu > Media > (highlight pictures) > press Blackberry button > Explore > Media Card > Blackberry > pictures > press Blackberry button > show hidden
In short, navigate to the folder where you hid the folder/file and press the Blackberry button and choose show hidden. you'll then see the hidden item in the list as a semi-transparent item. Highlight the item > press the Blackberry button > Properties > uncheck "Hidden". You can then go back and access the file as you normally would.

OR if you have a PC, use windows explorer & go to the Media Card folder where you hid the folder, in the Tools Menu- Folder Options- View tab- select "show hidden files and folders".
You folder will be visible (in windows) but slightly transparent.
Right-click the folder, select Properties.. uncheck the 'hidden' checkbox and click 'Apply'

Drive appears corrupt. Sometimes every folder appears empty yet the properties shows 3/4 of the drive is still used (120GB). I could access the drive 2hrs ago but now it has dropped of the scene - can't...

try to error checking disc. connect your usb drive to computer then right click, open the properties. there will be tab for 'tool', click it. there is option for error checking, click 'check now'. wait till finished recovery then open the drive again. if the data still missing maybe there will be hardware problem or it can be a virus too. hope this useful, regard riyan.

When plug in the pc the hdd can open but the problem is some files is missing but if you check the properties of the hdd its full and i can only see few items inside it.

It's clear from missing files that your hdd is infected from virus. Virus has a property to hide your files so that no one could see them but they these files are not permanently deleted. Thats why hdd properties shows they are full.
Method 1: Click "My Laptop" Switch to the advanced view (if you're using Windows XB.) Click "Folder Administrator" Click the tab called "Viewer" Check "Show all files or folders or applications" If you also wish to view system files, Uncheck "Show protected operating system files"
Method 2: Go to registry editor by running regedit in the run box. Go to this key: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoft WindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced In the right hand area, double click hidden and change the value to 1. Now you're all set to go. Check it in your tools menu if the changes have taken effect.
Method 3: If none of the above methods work, please download Smart Virus Remover or any other good software from internet. GOOD LUCK

I want to put my photos on a sd chip from my computer, can i do all of them at once, not one at a time. i have windows vista. Thanks

You can do them in groups but check that you are not exeeding the size of the SD.
Using Windows Explorer (click on VIEW and then DETAILS):

Method 1 - highlight the folder where the photos are stored in the computer. To check its size, right click on the folder and then click on properties. It should tell you its size. If it exeeds the capacity of the SD then you cannot use this method. You will have to break the folder down.
However if it will fit into the SD the right clik on the folder, click on copy. Locate where the SD is, click on its icon. Ensure the icon is highlighted, righ click, click on paste.
The complete folder will be copied into the SD in a few minutes.

Method 2 - open the folder where the photos are. Click on the first picture. Press and hold down on the CTRL key (do not release the CRTL key) , click on the next picture you want to copy, continue doing this for about four or five photos. You should have a highlighted area of photographs. right click on the highlighted area: a window will display the total size of your selection. Ensure that this is not larger than the size of your SD card. If it is not you can continue adding more photos by clicking on their icons while holding down the control key.
If the total size is larger than the size of your SD Card you can remove pictures by clicking on the highlighted icon (while holding down the CTRL key).
Once you are satisfied with your selection, RIGHT click on the highlighted area, then click on COPY. Release the CRTL Key. Locate where the SD is, click on its icon. Ensure the icon is highlighted, right click, click on paste.
Your selection of photos will be copied into the SD in a few minutes.

This sounds harder than what it really is. With a little practice it will become second nature.
These methods are basic COPY and PASTE techniques. Once you are comfortable with the techniques you may want to delete the files and folders from your computer by selecting them and deleting them once you have copied them to your SD card.
Additionally, you can expedite this by using CUT instead of COPY in the same methods above.
Hope this helps.

My pen drive's capacity is 32 is totally emptybut when i look in the properties it shows free space is only 6 gb and used space is 25 gb.

if you have downloaded any form of media (audio, video or photos) check your incomplete folder and delete..delete part (keep up to 2-3 months ago) of the cookies that a laptop/pc tend to just keep and it builds up...then search for hidden folders by going to my computer/tools/folder option/view/click on show hidden files and each hidden file and delete what you might have deleted already (be xtra xtra extra careful not to delete any microsoft windows needed files).when finished click back on the hidden button to hide folders again

Hello i have a toshiba l305 laptop and can't get the internal mic to work with any program that uses it

The Microphone might not be working, as it may not be enabled.
However, you may enable the Microphone manually by performing the below steps:
For Windows XP:

1) Double-click on the Volume Control. 2) Select the "Properties" option from the "Options" menu. 3) Select the "Recording" option in the "Adjust volume for" section. 4) Click the OK button. 5) Check the box labeled "Select" under the microphone volume and you should now be able to adjust the volume for the microphone.

For Windows Vista:
1) Right click Speaker near Clock - Recording Devices - right click in box - check 2) Show Disconnected Devices and Show Disabled Devices - check your mic - highlight them and then on lower right properties. 3) Make sure the proper one is enabled and check other settings - on Levels tab make sure MUTE is unchecked and APPLY / OK changes.

For Windows 7:

1) Right click on the volume icon in the system tray and then click “Recording devices”. 2) Right click on the blank place in the popped up window and then select “Show Disabled Devices” and “Show Disconnected Devices”. 3) Right click on Microphone and then click “Enable”. 4) Highlight the microphone and then choose “Set as Default Device”. 5) Click Apply. 6) Select Microphone and click on Properties. 7) Click on Levels tab. The default Microphone Boost is set to 0, increase it.
Hope this helps.

175gb missing from 250GB hard drive

Appreciate the "Ask Me".

The only plausible explanation for the missing disk space would be the protected folder "System Volume Info".

Re-formatting would not restore your free space, however, re-partitioning would. May I suggest that you try PowerQuest Partition Magic. Of course like formatting, re-partitioning would completely delete the partition itself and would grant you back the entire disk space.

Unfortunately you can not use the same with the 1st partition since that is your active partition and presumably where your OS is residing. A workaround is to use another hard disk temporarily and transfer all the contents of partition 1 and make that eventually as your primary HD. Thereafter, re-partition again the entire 250Gb HD.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Can`t read more than 950 MB from 2GB SD Card

Try to format the SD 2GB card with Fat32 to some volumes so u will have multiple drives on the same single SD card. You can do it via card reader and format command from your PC. If this does not help it is possible that the device can not read big size 2GB SD cards.
