Question about Maytag Atlantis MDE7400AY Electric Dryer

1 Answer

In the back of the drier there is a wiring plastic looking block with a number of wires going into it. As you?re facing the back of the drier looking at that block the terminal on the far left has three wires going into it. Two of those wires are broken off. It looks like they may have touched and shorted out. The drier works but it doesn?t get hot. When I tried to remove the nut holding those wires on the stud into the block broke off. I think this block is going to have to be replaced. There was some heat and scorching going on back there, I think this must have happened when those two wires shorted out. The model number of the drier is MDE7400AYW and the ser. # is 24529865EJ. Can that block be replaced and the wires re-attached fairly easily or is it more of a job than what it looks like. Also in this case what parts should be replaced and what is the cost of those parts.

Hi,
Often the vibration will loosen the wires, they then become hot and burn off...the block can be replaced... if you cannot buy it from and appliance repair site then check a local electrical supply. It really should not be that hard to replace it...
The burnt wires will need to be cut back and reattached...

You may even want to buy a new cord and use that to reattach to the block...

Here is a tip that will help you with changing your dryerplug. Dryer Cord and Wiring Dryer 3 Wire or 4 Wire

Where is the serial numbers located on the whirpool washer and dryer. its the basic ones

Normally the dryer model and serial numbers you are looking for is located on the drier door face of the machine where the door meets it. Look up top normally left hand side.
If it is not located there then maybe on the back of the drier.

Which wires are hot and which is the ground wire on Maytag DE7600 drier (back panel top to bottom 3 connections)

If you have the newer style, you should have 4 wires on the CORD <--- not the terminal block itself. They'll be; Black, White, Red and Green. The green goes to the frame/cabinet and the white ALWAYS (ALWAYS) connects to the center terminal. The Black and the Red attach to either of the 2 remaining terminals... doesn't matter which one.

If you have a 3 wire cord, don't worry about a green wire. Just wire it "black, white, red" or "red, white, black"... just make sure you put the white in the middle. Think Oreo cookie.

And to be specific about your question... The Black and the Red are the "hot" wires... each one carries 120VAC.

Changing 3 wire to 4 wire cord on dryer [electric type]

If you had a 3 wire system and need to adapt your drier to a 4 wire system.. here is how you do it.. Your 4 wire cord should have the following colored wire ends.. Red, Black, White and Green.. The red and black are the power leads and should be attached to the red and black terminals on the back of the drier.. The White wire is Neutral and should be terminated on the white terminal of the drier.. The green wire is Ground and should be attached to the nearest frame or chassis screw at the point of entry into the drier.. If you are using a metal cable clamp as part of a feedthru system to get the cord into the drier.. you can attach the green wire to one of the screws on that.. but that should be done only if you canot find a suitable frame ground screw near the terminal block.. Hope this helps...
