Question about Kenmore Dehumidifiers

1 Answer

I bought a Kenmore dehumidifier a 2 weeks ago and it sounds like it is going to come one but then goes off - listening to it right now and it has been doing this for the last 15 minutes. Is this normal? Why does it do this if so?

If you bought it 2 weeks ago, take it back and get a new one. A humidifier works kind of like an air conditioner, but a humidifier runs a larger Delta-T across the coil. In laymans wording, an HVAC unit might have a temperature split across the coil of 20 degrees where the temperature split across a humidifier might be 40 to 50 degrees. The reason for this is with a larger Delta-T, you are able to drop the air temperature across the coil and by doing this, your basically wringing the water out of the air. Because of this, it has safetys that a standard HVAC unit would not have. It usually has 2 low pressure switchs rather than one and it sounds like it might be tripping on one of them from lack or airflow or a low charge. Take it back and get a new one!!

How can you tell if the compressor in the dehumidifier is working?

listen for it , compressors have a distinct sound of tiny rocks hitting a pan (that not what's really going on in there ) that fans don't have

most units have a timer function that makes u wait for compressor to come on long after fan starts , so u might have to listen for up to fifteen minutes for it

We just bought our dehumidifier a week ago. It seems to run only on short cycles starting up for a couple of minutes then shutting off for a few and thencoming back on. It is very annoying and doesn't seem...

Still have the receipt? cause if its a stand alone i would say return it, short cycling could be anything from bad sensor or controls to it over heating etc., if its one on your central system, well fire your installer and call a reputable contractor.
The only thing that could cause it to short cycle it other wise would be a half opened half closed float contact switch on the internal storage for the h20 removed form the air (assuming its a prattle stand alone eat that is)

Humidity pad doesn't work

You've posted in DEhumidifier section.

Sounds like you have a Humidifier. Please post there.

Although why you want to add humidity to the tropics is beyond me.

Yes, it is a sealed system and it seems as though you may have a leak....unfortunately it will be cheaper to buy new then to fix.

Here is a tip that I wrote to help people to figure out what is going wrong with their dehumidifier2_bing.gif.

Kenmore 54501 turns on but nothing happens in my damp basement

A dehumidifier heats and cools the air to remove moisture. Most are like a small air cond. The Condenser coil is right in front of the evap.coil. So the compressor may not be coming on. Does it sound the same as before? It may be low on freon. You will have to get in there and listen and feel the lines at or near the compressor, Learn how to get down in there to the compressor. Run it for 10 Mins. unplug it, open it up, and feel the lines. Some lines should be or can be HOT to the touch. Some should be cool. The smaller the line the hotter it should be, and the compressor should be warm (to hot) to the touch. repost for more info.

01% humidity

When you push the power button, the blower fan comes on. In a few minutes you should hear a second "click"--that is your compressor starting. Do you hear that second click?

The compressor is located in the rear bottom on the right side looking at the machine. After you press the start button and the blower fan comes on, bend over near the back of the unit and listen for the "click".

Will not take moisture out of room.

If your dehumidifier has a filter make sure you clean it with warm water and mild detergent. Manufacturers recommend that you do this every 2 weeks. The main issue is most likely your coil is dirty. Usually you can remove the front cover and brush the coils off wth a small brush. If your dehumidifier didnt come with one you an clean it with a toothbrush. Good luck and let me know how it goes. No water is collected.

Return the unit, it is obviously faulty, & Kenmore stands behind their products very well.
